Basically was owed some money and was sent a cheque...but the name on it was left blank.
Can I just right in my own name, or is that illegal? I'm assuming yes....
As in, you've received a signed but blank cheque?
It's illegal to write a name on it if you're not the signatory.
Send it to me and I'll dispose of it for you.

the latter...the amount is stated, but its not made out to anyone
Make it out to yourself, no issues.
cant see owt wrong as long as the cheque was intended to be given to you . Many people give nameless cheques a) they are used to dealing with people who don't have bank accounts so the cheque can go in a friends or family members b) they are used to people who for one reason or another chose not to put cash through their bank account and so can use the nameless cheque as cash to pay other people.
You used to be able to turn a cheque into a negotiable instrument by signing the back but most are now struck through with account payee only .
Send me your bank account details and I'll sort it out....
