Hi

We’re renting a cottage in this area for a family get together and I’m interested in some local knowledge please.

A nice hour loop on the road bike.

Nice pubs with great local ales and food.

Things for kids to do ages 3-7.

Thanks in advance.

If you search on here for threads on Wirksworth this will help for Pubs and some things to do close by.
Can’t really help on the road loop but I’m sure someone will be along to help.
Heritage railway runs into Wirksworth and Black Rocks is nearby, good for walks and off road rides.

Things to do with kids

Carrington Reservoir - walks including statue trail for kids, 2 play areas, 7 mile cycle route round the water, sailing, canoeing, rafting, windsurfing.

Also got High Peak and Tissington Trails close by. Kids might be young but we had many happy hours with ours at Cromford mill and canal.

Matlock Bath, Britain's furthest inland seaside resort. Chatsworth within easy reach for more walking if not the house. Royal Oak at Hurdlow worth the drive if you can book a table.

Matlock Meadows ice cream farm.

Absolutely spoilt for road riding round there but helps if you like hills!

Ohh, I used to sail at CW.. 🤪

Ashbourne is a small market town, try that.

The Red Lion at Hognaston used to be good (real food and real beer)

Erm... this was over 20yrs ago

You can ride around Carsington but on the roads a bit further out for a decent hour loop. The climb up out of Hognaston is good. It is pretty hilly but I can shift my fat butt up them so you should be ok.

The top part of this loop is good. You prob need to add a bit on to make it an hour though.

Crich tramway museum isn’t far away and is great with the kids. Ashbourne is good for a short wander.

Born and bred carson was I, well i moved there when I was 3 and didn't leave for wirksworth till 18. The miners arms in the village I believe has been shut for a refurb of late so not sure if its reopened yet, if it has it always gets good reviews.
As for a ride I'd head out of the village towards hopton past hopton halls orchard curved walls (lived there too) on your right. Just afterwards take a left turn up "the dean" then it all depends on how much climbing you want. In fact I could go on and on, i could genuinely give you more info if you like so drop me an email or message on here and I can oblige rather than boring the forum with it all.

Great area and a shame you'll only be able to steal an hour on the bike as there is loads of epic riding to be done. Matlock isn't too far away by bike and features two climbs that are in the top 100 climbs app (Bank Street and Starkholmes) if you fancy a challenge. Just pick any direction and head out and you can't go far wrong. For good upmarket pub grub try the Cock inn at Muggington or the Joiners Arms at Quarndon, the Knockerdown Inn is pretty good too for more standard decent pub grub. Black Rock at Wirksworth is good for a family wander. There is Matlock Bath for a bit of a Blackpool 'kiss me quick' cheesy feel. Arkwrights Mills if you want to see where the Industrial Revolution kicked off, Kedleston Hall is worth a visit if you like National Trust country houses and estates. Thorpe Cloud for a nice walk with some impressive scenery and geology. The list goes on. Do a bit of research and you'll have no end of things to do.

Lovely stuff. I love a good climb so I’ll look to tick those off the list.
