You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
New car coming soon next week so I’d love to know a few things & this is THE place to ask.
Trackers? Any good, any point? Which ones? Thatcham? Can the theiving scum detect a tracker & its location on the vehicle?
Apart from an immobiliser/alarm that’s factory fitted is there a simple way to stop the car starting even if someone clones the key, you know, like removing the rotor arm like we did years ago?
Or how about an old fashioned bin lid steering wheel cover with a big **** off padlock on?
(Security bollard on the drive for at home maybe.)
Any advice is appreciated!
Isolator switch on the battery feed or on the ignition under the dash?
They are quite bulky though.
Maybe something like this will fit onto the battery terminal

Ghost immobiliser
I had a Ghost immobiliser. It was a PITA to use. Entering the code and waiting for the hazards to flash added an annoying amount of time to jumping in and driving away. Plus all the times you'd forget or fumble the buttons in the wrong order, pull away, stall, turn the ignition off to restart the sequence while you're half in the road. Hated it. And there's no visual deterrent so by the time someone realises they can't drive your car away, they've already made a right mess of it.
I'd just get yet a Disklok next time but I've got no plans to ever have a desirable car again.
I work in the car security industry so i can give you some pointers....
what make/model of vehicle is it for..? different cars need different solutions.
TBH if they really want the car they’ll knock on your door and politely ask for the keys 🙂
Re disclock , son has advised apparently they cut the arm off the disclock (ford st owner) and spray expanding foam inside the disclock (drive with disclock on) best security would be buy something they don't want to steal (skoda and citroen owner myself) shit but thats modern UK for you.Albeit it will slow them down
Disabling the OBD port (by moving it or fitting a dummy one) is a good move, some cars can have a window broken/removed without setting the alarm off, they then can reach just inside the drivers footwell and connect a device to the OBD port to disarm the car alarm and immobilzer and then start it!
If its keyless entry see if its one of the keys that go to sleep when left still for 30 seconds or more, if its a key thats always active then buy a faraday pouch and keep the key in that (and the spare in another one) that way they cant stand next to your house windows and boost the keys signal to unlock the car
As already been said if they really want it they will politley wake you up in the middle of the night standing at the end of your bed

It’s not worth that much!
The best security is the security that you use and if it's a pain then it won't be used.
Most modern cars have a Thatcham-rated system and you can get a brief rundown by area here... https://crimerate.co.uk/vehicle-crime
If it's a Jag then good news... https://www.jaguar.co.uk/incontrol/secure-tracker.html and they're not as interesting to thieves as many marques anyway 😉
Discovery, Range Rover and i-Pace were the only keyless cars that couldn't be unlocked and couldn't be started during an ADAC survey in 2019 of 237 cars. Another four cars couldn't be both unlocked and started
What kind of car are you getting?
IDK, any extra security beyond what the car comes with seems likely to be an irritation.
Maybe with the exception of a Faraday pouch for keyless entry keys and PIN to drive.
Driveway bollards seem like a disaster waiting to happen.

Judging by my neighbours modern discovery unlocking it and starting it .....with the keys is hit and miss
It's a car. This is (one of) the reasons we pay insurance.

Quite. I'm sure it's not flawless but modern car security has come a long way. We're not fitting Moss alarms and Crooklocks into MkII Escorts any more. It all feels a bit like getting an iPhone made from sapphire glass, military steel, aircraft aluminium, dominatrix leather etc and then sticking it in a Hello Kitty phone case.
Ultimately, if someone wants to take it badly enough, they will. The best defence is to park next to something more desirable.
Two men are walking through a forest when suddenly they see a tiger in the distance, charging towards them. One guy takes some running shoes from his bag and starts putting them on.
“What are you doing?” asks the other man. “You'll never outrun a tiger!”
“I don’t have to run faster than the tiger,” he replies. “I just have to run faster than you.”
... case in point, something had reset itself on ours the other day. I got a phone call from my partner, for reasons best known to itself it had reverted to my login but on her key so was refusing to start until she'd entered my PIN code. And that's not an Aston Martin or a Tesla, it's a lowly Seat.
