Wool or MMF?
Salemans tells us that MMF (man made fibre) can be bleached, with a couple of elderly cats & our outdoorsy lifestyles this seems a good thing.
What are the advantage of wool? Nicer to walk one? It's not like the MMF stuff felt horrible..

and underlay, always been told to buy the best you can afford (my god the cheap cheap stuff is awful), being 'sold' some mid range stuff (recycles foam looking at it) for the spare room. Will this stuff fall to pieces, or is it ok? Should we go expensive underlay, in a room not used all that much?

Buy the underlay yourself from here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cloud-9-Cumulus-Carpet-Underlay-11mm-Thick-15-SqM-/400749237718?pt=UK_Home_Garden_FittedCarpets_Underlay_SM&hash=item5d4e8415d6

Be at least half the price they're charging you.

I would hope that wool has better eco credentials, and may even help keep some British farmers in business

I know an exciting friday afternoon post 😳

But yes, that does indeed seem to be half the price he suggested and with an extra 1/3 (which would probably do the box room) CHEERS!

EDIT: Shirely my dear, if we have to bin the carpet due to stains, many years before the MMF stuff will be, it fails the Eco credentials? BTW having farmed sheep (parents small holding), farmers are NEVER going to be kept going by sales of wool. Happy to consider wool, for a 'proper' reason, that ain't one 😉

Will struggle to beat here for good value underlay - I bought a load of coir matting from this company about a year ago and the service was very efficient, with rapid delivery exactly on the day promised.

Other than the fact the link I posted above beats them by about £12 once you've added delivery on 🙂

I've used the Ebay store with no complaints.
