Lad has bought 1st house 1950's ex council house and will be requiring new carpets and underlay. I have someone to fit on a supply only basis. Lad has chosen carpets but underlay is a minefield.

What is the best underlay to get? Downstairs is Concrete floor and upstairs is tongue and grove boards.

I had this https://www.screwfix.com/p/tredaire-softwalk-polyurethane-foam-carpet-underlay-9mm-15m/36534 fitted this yrs ago and had no issues.

Anything better to look at?

I recently used this lot - https://www.underlay-direct.uk

Very competitive at the time, quick delivery and they picked up the phone allowing me to speak to an actual real person. I had a feeling that they did push their own 'brand' but there's enough info there to make an informed choice. I'm happy enough with the Cloud 9 + Pure Seduction products I did buy and both went down onto T&G flooring. Some incredibly silly names for underlay products.

We've had carpets throughout about 12mths ago and didn't have underlay, no regrets.

Last time I had carpet fitted, we sourced our own Cloud 9 stuff which worked out cheaper than the rubber tat the carpet place was trying to bundle into the deal. The fitters were paid directly so made no odds to them other than some grumbles about the being 11mm underlay but no 11mm grippers.

I asked a Mexican carpet fitter for advice of what to put under my carpet. He said underlay, underlay.

We've just had 11mm underlay go under brand new carpet. Feeling underfoot and sound insulation is a world away from the old, cheap stuff.

The rubber tat is the best stuff. Remains springy, half decent thermal and noise properties. Have had the foam stuff before and found it wasn’t as good.

1950’s ex council house

Downstairs is Concrete floor

I would assume that the concrete floor will have no insulation with a property of that age so it will be prone to be VERY cold – if there is any suggestion of damp, get a membrane down, then insulating underlay.

I know, I have been there (although I wish I actually had the money to do it at the time – mine was rough-cut and thrown down off-cuts straight onto the concrete with no underlay at all for some time).

Cloud 9 Cummulous 11mm is great. Can pick it up cheap from ebay (£40-£45 a roll when I last purchased)

Come back to us in 3-4 years and see if you still feel the same. It is the underlay that adds to the longevity of the carpet above it and without it wear rates are usually much higher. Our tried and trusted carpet fitter (not the shop where we bought the carpet from) always told us to by the best underlay you can afford even if it means going for a slightly lower quality carpet as in the long term this would give the best outcome.

^^ Madness not to use underlay with brand new carpets - complete false economy.

We went for the Cloud9 11mm under all the carpets too, no regrets. Sounds much better upstairs, and insulates our thankfully damp free concrete floored living room well.

The stuff that I took up was, I think, Duralay ribbed rubbery stuff - no idea how long it had been there, but was so perished it had to be vacuumed out of the floorboards.

For concrete floors I used TimberTech2 Acoustic Plus Gold Underlay 5mm.

Got it from https://www.wood2u.co.uk

Bit extravagant and I think there is a 3mm version available.
Its underneath laminate, provides good dampening and insulation. No issues for the last three years

Another vote for Cloud 9, we had super contract 10mm, from whoever was reasonably priced off ebay. Much better than the cheap old stuff we got rid of. Carpet fitter said it was good stuff as well.

Someone want me?
No I won't lay under your carpet.
I'm useless as underlay.
