How sad, Rocky, Predator and most recently Madalorian. Gone.
Not a big age.
Noooooo 😲 😞
🙁
Nooo. A great actor and so many iconic roles. For some reason I always think of him in Happy Gilmore before anything else.
Edit. Oops.
Sad news
"Lovely Day" is one of my favourite songs
I love the Rocky films, I’m sad this has happened. But Apollo we love you 👍
Sorry cynic-al I find it a bit tasteless to take the piss in someone’s RIP thread. Or maybe to you “they all look the same”,
I suspect its nothing to do with 'they all look the same'
Kryton, probably just you who connected it that way, what does that say about you then..sad very sad , the rest of us just connected the name as the gag..
Ironically its regrettable you posted that..😉
Played appollo creed brilliantly, rocky 1 and 2 are superb films, fantastic physique....Rip
Jesus TF Christ no one share a Joseph Kony meme, else he'll have a shit fit
Kryton, probably just you who connected it that way, what does that say about you then..sad very sad , the rest of us just connected the name as the gag..
I still don’t get the gag, so if I’ve misunderstood something legitimate I apologise, but do keep piling in despite the circumstances.
I still don’t get the gag
There's literally a link to explain it.
To be fair, you deserve a bit of a pile on for accusing someone of being a racist without evidence.
It links to multiple references to Bill Wilthers Lovely Day lyrics. And?
To be fair, you deserve a bit of a pile on for accusing someone of being a racist without evidence.
You must have missed the word “maybe” in my post. When someone explains to me how the reference is nothing to do with race, I reserve the right to hold my unqualified opinion.
Carl Weathers
Bill Withers
Similar init!
Dear god kryton , you linked race to a name similarity gag , implying racism with a very very silly they all look the same comment, thats on you big time, it never entered my head , probably nobody elses either....why did it enter your head...i truly despair sometimes😒
Anyway. Hilarious in Arrested Development, playing “himself”. ‘Baby, you got a stew goin’ 😂
it's a little odd as Krypton has an Afro-Caribbean wife IIRC.
Never heard of Carl Weathers.
When I saw the thread title I thought of Bill Withers, same as cynic-al....
Jumping the gun a bit there, kryton....
I half remember a joke about a duck, a microwave and a soul singer, but I dare not repeat it for fear of being called a racist.
you linked race to a name similarity gag
Did I? Or did Cynic-al? Because with a mixed race family, overt racism on the up and the atypical stw demographic in mind it’s not difficult to reach that opinion. And remember, I said maybe and it was a questionable sentence, not a statement. It’s up to cynic-al and his conscience to clarify.
Just to be clear, theres also no link to it being a lovley day BECAUSE Carl Weathers has sadly passed away..thought it best best to clarify...
Hes hookin , hes hookin, hes hookin, dam it man come on, whats the matter with you, this guy will knock you on your ass...there is no tommorrow, there is no tommorrow, ..superb
The lesson here is, if you're going to make jokes about recently deceased black people make sure they are actually funny.
Otherwise people will just assume you're posting it to be racist since most racist 'jokes' aren't actually funny. Or even jokes.
Straws.
Clutching.
Receantly deceased people......only two people brought up race
Its not a racist joke , its a joke...if you find it funny or not its a light hearted joke based on name similarity..
For gods sake....
Not funny.
Bad taste.
At the expense of people of colour.
Like I said, it's got all the hallmarks of a racist 'joke' so it's not surprising someone might take it to be an attempt at humour by someone who holds certain prejudices, whether conscious or sub-conscious.
Even if it was in no way meant that way.
Yeah, it's tough being a white man. It's like we're the persecuted minority, am I right?
Not funny, bad taste, possibly
but Its not at the expense of people of colour, its name...
What hallmarks? Your interpretation? Your link?
Do you know my colour , no you dont...
.
Otherwise people will just assume you’re posting it to be racist
I think most people can see it for what it was.
If I'm not sure if something is racist or not I just think to myself, is this a 'joke' that Bernard Manning would make?
In this case, I could definitely imagine Bernard Manning making the same joke on stage the day Carl Weathers died.
So there you go, that's how I decide.
But of course, there are people of colour out there who will argue Manning wasn't a racist but I'm not sure if we should really disregard what we can see and hear for ourselves. No matter how wrong it feels as a white person to tell a person of colour you think they are wrong when it comes to racism.
Like I said, it's tough being a white man. It's never simple and we just have to accept we're never right.
So there you go, that’s how I decide.
Must be true then.
for what it was.
For what you “assume” it was. I’ve asked a question and formed an opinion based on a different assumption, and until / if ever the postee chooses to clarify in honesty none of us know true answer.
After Brucewee’s post;
When in the you're around other races (im speaking of my experience in the Uk) a lot you get to be educated and see unconscious and conscious bias that you’d have never realised before. This has a direct impact on the individual recipient and can of course have a wider impact on a whole community. It serves us all to open our eyes to any prejudice. Equally though it can lead to over sensitivity - albeit that very sentence can (and has been used against me) also be used to justify racially biased actions.
I’ve asked a question
There was no question in your first response.
I had to Google Carl Weathers as I had never heard of him. Turns out he is/was black.
I think you're getting your knickers in a twist and trying to be outraged for the fun of being outraged.
Anyway, as is often the case, it’s not what was originally said that exposes prejudices and bias. It’s the reactions to someone saying they think something is racist that are really telling.
This.
Poor Carl’s RIP thread getting derailed by petty STW bollocks.
Poor Carl’s RIP thread getting derailed by petty STW bollocks.
Indeed 😢 As is always the case on this forum. It really can be shite at times.
Wow. Some serious crap being written on this thread.
As someone in a similar position to Kryton, married to an African lady with mixed race children, I see on a daily basis the casual racism that is being elicited in this thread. Not so much the poor joke that was made, but in the other responses. Especially Bruce’s. I’ve had a few drinks so may be I’m misreading it, but it seems to show a complete turd of a human being. But I could be misreading it. I’m pretty sure no one on this forum would try to equate the hardships of what black and other ethnic races have been through to that of being white?
Ive deleted this message/reposted it a few times as I’m pretty sure Bruce wouldn’t be the person whom I am misreading his post to be.
If I’m p1ssed and mis-read what he wrote, I apologise and I’ll apologise again in the morning. But for some reason that post has really annoyed me.
Especially Bruce’s
I read it that BruceWee was supporting kryton's point of view.
Maybe, maybe it’s my own prejudices….but these words do not seem supportive. It could well be the rum though….
Like I said, it’s tough being a white man. It’s never simple and we just have to accept we’re never right.
Anyway, as is often the case, it’s not what was originally said that exposes prejudices and bias. It’s the reactions to someone saying they think something is racist that are really telling
Reading back through Bruce’s previous posts, I am very likely to be missing some context. It’s a bit of a mixed bag. Looks like I’m wrong and being the arse, so for that I apologise. Seriously sorry Bruce if I’ve taken your posts out of context.
Subtle posts by BruceWee but
Yeah, it’s tough being a white man. It’s like we’re the persecuted minority, am I right?
and
Like I said, it’s tough being a white man. It’s never simple and we just have to accept we’re never right.
Are a bit MAGA stylee weird and creepy frankly!
I think I know what he means... Regardless of what your opinion is, you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't, if you know what I mean.... There is always someone looking to find a crack that they can stick their finger into.
Everyone seemingly wants to be offended and is ready to shout about it.
Doubt Mr Wooster is a MAGA fan boy.... How've, if he is, then **** him. 🤪
I’m clearly not a MAGA fan boy, I just reposted what Bruce had said earlier. I just did the cut and paste very badly so it looked like they were my words.
FWIW I’m married to a beautiful lady from Tanzania and we have two daughters. I’m not in anyway looking for outrage, I personally didn’t see the original joke as racist, just poor form that could be construed either way.
Other posts have been confusing!! And as said earlier. If I’ve misunderstood what Bruce was saying, I apologise. I’m still confused by what ever it is he is saying though.
It’s hard to explain the racism we see though. My wife is a successful businesswoman, earns significantly more than me, in most shops and sales environments we go to she is ignored. The higher end shop or restaurant the more it happens. This really is a daily occurrence. Even in her business, if we meet clients or contractors working for her, they treat me as the person behind the company. It’s massively blatant.
I could go on about this but I’m going to leave it along and go to bed.
Again, Bruce. I apologise if I misread your posts.
Sorry w00dster, sincere apologies if you thought my previous post was directed towards you in anyway. It wasnt.
I just thought those comments by BruceWee were a bit.... odd
Well, I'm sorry to hear about Carl Weathers. He played some iconic characters.
This thread is a fitting tribute as always.
Good work lads.
So it's not just me finished with dry January then? I think having a few drinks and getting into a discussion on the subtleties of micro-aggressions is something we should start doing every Friday night.
Anyway, to clarify.
Yeah, it’s tough being a white man. It’s like we’re the persecuted minority, am I right?
Pure sarcasm. Should have had a winky.
Like I said, it’s tough being a white man. It’s never simple and we just have to accept we’re never right.
That one probably wouldn't have been helped by a winky.
It was a response to the post above mine where the person implied they weren't white. Partly it was a call back to the first, but I was also showing how even if there is someone who is pretty undeniably a racist (in this case Bernard Manning as in the story I linked), often there will be a person of colour who defends them or defends what they say.
As a white person, it feels very wrong to tell a person of colour you disagree with them on racism but at the same time I think it's OK to disagree and challenge. After all, racism takes so many different forms in terms of how it is directed towards people of different races and in terms of mirco-aggressions vs overt racism.
So yeah, just realised I wasn't quoting the posts I was responding which no doubt didn't help.
I am sticking with this quote though:
Anyway, as is often the case, it’s not what was originally said that exposes prejudices and bias. It’s the reactions to someone saying they think something is racist that are really telling.
I think if someone calls out something as being racist (or even just suggests it might be) some people are going to have a knee jerk reaction and jump in to deny it. Plenty were more than happy to do that which is what got me annoyed. Just to clarify, it's possible to say something racist or racially insensitive and not be racist. We should all be open to being challenged on what we say because often we can say incredibly racist stuff just through not thinking through all the nuances.
Just ask Danny Baker. Again, I believe his original tweet was racist but unintentionally, but it was his reaction to the racism being pointed out that was problematic.
Anyway, I came here last night to post on the rugby thread rather than this one (far more suited to having had a few drinks). I just saw this one and got a shock. Weirdly enough I'd just been watching him in Arrested Development.
'Baby, I got a stew going'
Sorry to hear Action Jackson is gone, he was a big part of my 1980s and 90s
Blimey, I didn't expect that! Apologies that my joke didn't go down entirely as intended.
Not intended as racist one bit (it's a style of joke popular among a group of friends, some of whom are on here).
Is it safe to say he’s with teh angles??
As one of Al’s friends he’s referring to I can confirm that this is meant to be a joke, there are no (intended!) racist undertones to it at all, every famous person who dies gets this treatment, the previous one was Annie Nightingale with pictures of Florence Nightingale and others I can’t recall just now. It plays on the FB numpties/huns who are grief mongers and usually post the wrong picture of the person or have atrocious spelling such as “she’s wiv teh angles”.
Others have been posted on here before too without issue.
jeeeshh
Blimey, I didn’t expect that!
Why would you? In what other setting would getting savaged for making a joke based on surname similarity be considered normal?
The same surname-similarity joke has been done on this forum dozens of times with barely a feather ruffled. It's weird that this particular version should cause so much angst.
As for Carl, I can't recall seeing him in anything other than Predator, where he played a good counter to the big "star" really well.
**** me! This went awry quickly. Completely forgot that Carl Weathers was the voice of Combat Carl in Toy Story 4. This thread needs some good vibes.
Easing the tension. Easing the tension

People really got triggered.
Yep, some people definitely did.
Yep, some people definitely did.
Yep. It's weird. I always thought it was the woke people who were supposed to be the snowflakes. This thread shows otherwise.
What was the post about again?
My wife is a successful businesswoman, earns significantly more than me, in most shops and sales environments we go to she is ignored. The higher end shop or restaurant the more it happens. This really is a daily occurrence. Even in her business, if we meet clients or contractors working for her, they treat me as the person behind the company. It’s massively blatant.
Is this because of her heritage or because she is a woman ? Obviously wrong in either instance.
I don’t need to make excuses for any of these people , but how do you come across in your interactions ? . For example , my friend runs a business and her husband works for her . Unless you knew them , you wouldn’t know this, as he is very overbearing and likes to make himself the centre of attention.
I wish big Carl was here to knock you chumps heads together.
”you got no style, Dutch...”
