OK i know its not likely to be the most stimulating topic tonight but Im going for a last minute ski trip and have always had a fetish for one of those fancy cargo bags. No doubt brought on by the advert of rugged people heading into the wilderness.

A suitcase may be more practical but i fancy treating myself a little and was having a look at the haglofs and standard north face ones, then I saw the hi gear one from go outdoors.

Im heading away this saturday so dont have too much time to faff around loads of shops.

opinions on the bags would be appreciated

ta

I was looking at them recently, this one came up on amazon, seems reasonable

I've got a monster big North Face duffel bag one. It is okay, but any time you want to take it away from a car or van it is a pain to deal with. You can drag them around, but they end up with big holes in where they catch on things - mine lasted one long trip (about 6 months total) then died.

Unless you have something oddly shaped so need the particular shape of bag, and never go any further than about 100m from a car, I'd go for a rucksack or suitcase every time.

I've got a Hagloffs one, it's been brilliant. Ive used it on three Cycle Oregon trips. School kids load and unload over two thousand of them every day for a week, if a bag can survive that abuse it's worth having. I saw many other holed with straps and buckles torn off.

I've got a big grey nylon bag like that, had it for years. It's been to Vail, Chamonix, the Massif Central, and all sorts of holidays away, and so far the only damage is one of its little plastic feet has pulled off. It's been brilliant, able to hold enough stuff for a week away, with a matching shopping-bag sized carry-on bag, which carries stuff like passport/tickets/books/electronics. I wouldn't go for a vinyl one under any circumstances, but 1000D Cordura ought to survive pretty much anything. In fact, I think I bought my bag for a trip I won to LA, in '93, with Vail in '94.

I got a NF base camp duffel (70l) last spring and love it.
It got loads if use almost every day last summer for carting sailing stuff around and still looks new.
Although you wouldn't go hiking with it i found the rucksack sraps are great for carrying loads of kit half and mile to the beach and back each day.
Paid £50 at a NF outlet store and would def consider getting a larger one. Nice to have.

I've got an Endura one (logo'd as we added it onto a custom group jersey order) it was a bit of a beast to lug round when travelling until I realised I could use the handles to wear it like a huge rucksack.

Cotswold generally sell the mountain equipment ones pretty cheap, we've got two that have taken a hammering for years.

I have a North Face Base Camp, it has been all over the world with me over the last 5 years and is doing well so far.

I got a North Face one years ago. STill going strong after dozens of long haul flights and hardly a mark on it despite the best efforts of a Sicilian baggage handler.

I've been using deployment bags for carting all my kit around. Great bits of kit and best of all can be picked up for £10-15.
