Toevs speculated that while Valentine was sawing into a branch, the blade hit a knot in the wood, causing the chainsaw to kick back.

More likely the nose of the bar touched a branch behind the one that he was cutting.
Brings tears to your eyes, right enough.

The manager of Newhaven Marina cut his arm off a few years ago with a chainsaw while working in his garden. He calmly went round to his neighbour to ask for help and after he stopped the bleeding and put the arm in with frozen pastries it was sewn back on.
