I was put in touch with a education and training charity CEO. I went down to meet him and talk about moving in to the training sector with a focus on leadership & management. Chat turned in to a job offer, however, starting salary of 23k. I am currently on 28, but in a role that really does not inspire me, no clear progression paths.
The CEO of the company I went to meet, is branching off from apprenticeships to more corporate training, looking at coaching & mentoring and leadership. They are working with a performance coach who coached the English rugby and football teams, as well as working with Exeter chiefs. All this seems like a great opportunity and a foot in the door in this sector.
The role offered could be a mix of apprenticeship training and more corporate training, which would be great exposure and experience for the future.
The pay puts me off a little, but I appreciate I have to start somewhere. What would STW do if in my position?
Back in the mists of time when I graduated, I had two job offers.
One offered working on fairly cutting edge tech in Basingstoke.
One offered significantly less money (25% less), but international travel and better training prospects.
I didn't pick Basingstoke.
What would STW do if in my position?
Explain the situation and see if you can negotiate the salary? They seem to have wanted you, rather then you approaching them..

Thats quite a salary drop, especially at that level.
What would you have to give up to drop to that level.
I'd be tempted to say you're flattered by the offer, but at that salary level doesnt work for you.

I’d gladly take 3-5K less if the job was my passion.
I’m quitting to go back to med school and will lose 50k per year for 4 years and then start at the bottom again.
Get it in writing/contract and sign up.
Tell the CEO, they might respect your honesty and sneak in a bit more but they don’t, well I’d rather have a passionate member of staff compared to a do’er.
Cheers guys. When he said the salary, I did say it was too low and I'd have to go back speak to my OH and do some number crunching. I'll go back to him and ask for a little more, but realise they are a not for profit organisation. The future career prospects are much better and the CPD on offer sounded really interesting.
I'd have to make a few cut backs, but nothing too drastic as I've already made cutbacks since the last pay cut move (from teaching to heritage)

That's a chunk less, and it's always hard to get back to the level you were as once there it's seen as big pay rise, but if it's a dream job then go for it.
Money wise, that's upto you. Could you take that much of a pay cut?
It's all very well people saying "it's only £5k, £15/day, but then to a lot of people that's the rent!". Dropping from £50k to £45k might be a no brainer for a job you love, but at your level it's a significant proportion of your income, and you will notice it because it's your disposable income that'll be cut.
I took a massive pay cut when got made redundant (£48k to £18k) out of desperation (and an inkling that a job in television sounded like more fun than the alternatives on offer). 2 years on I'm earning better money (still not where I was) but the hours and T&C's are appalling.
