[Closed] Career ending ...

The decision came as a shock when I thought I was doing the right thing all these years. I could have met the requirements for lower grade but one of the person in the panel decided that he would rather I go through the whole process again just to gain that lower grade. The person is a colleague ... felt a cold sharp steel in the back now.

Not only that I have to thank them with a smile for giving me the opportunity ... then back to day responsibilities. One wrong move and my meagre earning would be gone.

Not sure what your career is, though I guess you're in academia by your terminology and unstable part time earnings (not something industry gets away with normally)?

I'm in a similar situation myself right now, only instead of being pushed I think I'm seriously considering jumping. Been doing notably more than my fair share and grading for 4 years with no recompense (despite a really helpful manager) but I just don't see any way forward as I'm under-valued. Industry is looking tempting with even fresh graduates getting more than I currently do for fewer hours.

Shame, I love the job and things were just getting cooking.

Sympathies - but at least you have some income still (if I understand you correctly).

I am on my penultimate day at work today, with nothing to move into and 4 kids/wife to support. The redundancy is pretty decent, but won't last forever. I deal with it by seeing the challenge as a kick up the backside to move on (something I should probably have done a while ago) and keep telling myself that this is exciting. Most of the time it works.

It's an opportunity, not an ending. Sorry to get all American but really, you need to look at it as a positive thing, accept it's happening and move on immediately. As one door closes two more open.

Every career move that I've been forced into has just made things better for me in the end. Grab hold of that perspective and make something of it.

I'm currently doing a job I really enjoy for a company that I think is doing something very important. I actually care quite a lot about what I'm doing but a re-organisation has left me feeling very demotivated about continuing to work here. So I've started looking elsewhere and I'm discussing a couple of opportunities one of which will give me a massive payrise and another that will provide some incredibly interesting work in a great location. I feel good again.

Your guess is right. Got guarantee pt work for another year but not sure if the hour will be sufficient but will just have to get through for the downgrade at this stage ...

if you spent a decade to end up working part time for £15K I don't think it's working out well for you, try something else?

Look now for something and leave when you find it. As the saying goes "it's easier to find a new job when in work". You have 12 months paid job-search time.

Part time for £15K isn't bad though, unless it's for 31 hours!

What would you really like to do? (Assuming no restrictions on time and location). Do you need to earn lots more than £15K or will a small increment do, say £3K rather than another £10K. At the larger end it will mean staying in the same field or close to it, the smaller end could be achieved with a major change.

I think academics completely undervalue their skills and ability to provide interesting contributions to "industry" (as they rather quaintly call all non-academic/public sector jobs). In aprt, I think it's the incredible specialisation, and also the doubt that's sown from going from one 6 month contract to another.

Go and get some decent careers advice.

Samuri makes a really important point - try not to leave [b]from[/b] something, but go [b]to[/b] something. So, much as I like where I work right now, I'm always on the look out for something better.

I called it a career because of the rather constant hours I got for £15K. So a career of pt work at £15K. Yes, not working well for a long time but I have to stick to certain rules.

I think I need to start on my own as I am really fed up with all those power play working for others ... earn enough with hard work is enough for me.

... hmmm ... need to get through the next few weeks first as I now even need to challenge the downgrade work i.e. they are asking a lot for a downgrade.

TO be blunt, what is it that you specialise in?

Dont look for a career, you may be disapointed. Look for a job that pays enough and is with an organisation worth working for.

Each time I got sacked / made redundant / left I ended up much better off. Keep looking till you find something better, dont wait more than 10 days to start looking, never mind 10 years.
