Currently in the NHS as an IT manager (euphemism for doing everything under the sun). Job fairly secure if a bit uninspiring and only very averagely paid (for near London standards anyway).
Have always had a thing for programming (current job involves a bit of MSSQL/PHP/Web interface development but only a bit so I can manage but I am rubbish at OOP/Testing/Versioning). I am considering dropping it all and doing a Ruby On Rails Web development course and working my way from there.
Am I crazy? Would I end up working 8-8 ? Would I end up at the dole queue? Thanks!
Hm nobody?
Haven't a clue what all this mssql and c++ is but i would say, what do you really really want to do, as the job you mention sounds just as boring. Imagine working 12 hour days everyday just to buy an audi or bigger kitchen, when seeing your mates or family down the pub would be more fun. Not a very good answer I know.
Hmmm, Ruby is a bit niche really. Why not get into bespoke Wordpress integrations/development.
Saying that, we always end up using Ruby guys lots so maybe I am talking rubbish?
