I got the boy Carcassonne + rivers and Abbotts last week and we've had a few games. Cracking little game.
We've played basic (highwayman, knight, monk) then added in rivers and have just tried with farmers. All pretty straightforward.
I just want to check something with points though.
Say there's a village and free road that on your turn you complete straight away, do you just instantly claim it with a highwayman? The same for a two tile city?
We've got a funny little "highwayman in, highwayman out" chorus when it happens
Yes that's fine and makes good tactical sense!
I can see us buying a billion expansions for it. We're going to need a bigger table
Oh, and can you put monasteries side by side?

Totally. Ever been to North Yorkshire? They're right next to each other...

Yes, IF you have a meeple spare.

Sure. Why wouldn't you be able to?

Not all expansions are equal. Inns and Cathedrals is essential, I'd never play without it. Traders and Builders is a great expansion and adds a lot of new stuff. Beyond that it's a very mixed bag.
If you want lots of expansions, look out for the big box edition that comes with nearly all of them. It is a lot cheaper, and can often be found on non UK amazon sites for example.
Yes, claim it instantly.
Also, be mindful that the official rule for cities is the a 2-tile city only scores 2 points when completed, not 4. Everyone gets that one wrong.

This isn't wrong, it's a rule change. The original edition gave you two points for a 2-tile city, the Z-Man reprint awards 4. I think the official tournament rules give you four now also.
As Cougar says, you can as long as you have the meeple. I also insist that the player places and then immediately removes their meeple from the city/road in order to claim the points, it's bad etiquette otherwise (yes I'm that guy).
Only expansion I have is the Count, King and Robber, mostly use it just for the river expansion which adds a fork to the river and makes it much longer, good way to start the game IMO.
The river with the fork is The River II. AFAIK all regular English editions come with The River as standard (though possibly not all the Big Box versions, there's been like eight releases of that with different contents and I've lost track).
And yeah, it's good practice to hop the meeple on and straight off again, it makes it clear what you're doing and it means you don't "accidentally" score when you've run out.
Just went and checked my box, pretty sure it came with the River and with the inns and cathedrals.
time for a new expansion?
do the new reprint versions match the old one?

Consider me corrected. I'm a purist though. Also, there's a powerful approach of combining farms with multiple 2-tile cities, and I think 4 points per city would end up with that being way OP.
I recently got the Princess and the Dragon expansion. It adds an interesting twist, but I wouldn't want to use it every game.
Pros :
The wooden dragon is just lovely
The 'princess' rules are good and make a nice addition
Cons :
Not sure what volcanos have to do with it
Also, now that you've got the game, its time to look at personalised meeples!

Yeah. I play with the old rule here also, for exactly the same reason.

Yes and no. The artwork is different, so you'll have mismatching colours when playing. If you don't care about that then it's still mechanically compatible - ie, everything will line up and the tile backs haven't changed. (And if the tile backs do ever change, you can fix that by drawing from a bag rather than loose tiles.)

I came with so much advice. And then found it was worthless as there seems to be a game of the same name.
