I want to fit an inverter. I've got the perfect place for it, but I need to wire it into the battery cable. It's a 500W job (although I only plan to use it for charging devices etc) so the cable is pretty thick - as is the cable in the van. I'm having trouble finding a junction box or other method of joining such thick cable. I'd need a three-way one and perhaps two-way because I want to install an inline fuse too.

You'll need one for the neutral and one for the positive but they'd take the load. I'd rather a single cable straight back to the battery terminal with the correct in-line fuse fitted near the battery and the neutral straight to the chassis for 50a load.

Are you going to install a separate socket just for the inverter or wire into the rest of the 249 system in the caravan? If the second option you should really have some kind of selector so you can't have both the inverter and the mains feed powering your van (if you forget to turn off inverter when connecting to mains).

I'd just plug a 4-way into the inverter itself, or possibly wire in a separate socket. The whole van works fine off the grid on battery, the inverter is only for the odd device that doesn't have a 12v adapter which basically means laptops.

I’d rather a single cable straight back to the battery terminal with the correct in-line fuse fitted near the battery and the neutral straight to the chassis for 50a load.

Well, being a caravan made mostly of wood, it's a twin cable to the battery box. And yes, in the previous van I wired it straight into the battery box, but then it was in a much more convenient location. But you do have a point yes, it might be easier than trying to fit huge junction boxes even if it does mean another hole in the battery box that needs sealing.

Sorry, I missed the caravan part. The neutral would obviously have to go back to the battery also.
