Peugeot 406 HDi. Did have a flat battery but that's been charged. Cranking but just not starting. I've also tried it with the battery booster on it, plus attempted to jump start from a van. I'm getting fuel in and out of the filter, but that's as much as I can think to check.

Any ideas?

Immobiliser?

Lock doors with remote, unlock them after a minute or so and try again.

My best guess is it's broken.

My neighbour had issues like this, the garage said it was related to a wiring fault under the drivers side footwell, caused by water ingress from a leak on the rear light cluster,is the carpet dry? apparently it is a common fault after changing a bulb.(just done a quick google)

Had a short on a 206 that meant it would not start

Its something to do with wiring- short or break- if a bump wont start it

Nothing happens at all?

Any puffs of white smoke as you crank? That's unburned fuel. If you don't get that, then no fuel is going in. Quite possibly the fuel cutoff solenoid is stuck closed if that's the case. But then again, if that's a common rail engine, it might be something fancy in the injection system that's causing trouble. You might need to scan for codes if so. Or it's the immobiliser.

Code scan would be your next option I reckon.

Join the AA.
The main fault might be that its french and that it has been raining...
Good luck.

"Fuel" or diesel? Throw a match at it, if you lose your eyebrows and half the garage it's been misfuelled.

Vacuum System? perished fuel line? Primed?

Based on a 206 with similar symptoms that failed to start suddenly with no fault codes.

Yeah, it's diesel. I covered half the engine bay in it when I popped the pipes off to check.

It has been rained on a lot so that could be it. Just wondering now if the jump leads aren't man enough for the job. It's turning over but without much gusto. Gonna borrow some beefier ones and try again.

Make sure the earth lead from the battery to gearbox to bodywork is secure and not corroded as this may cause problems with starting/charging etc.

Don't fiddle with the fuel rail, it's under extremely high pressure. 5000psi if memory serves.

Has it ran out of diesel at any point?

Never ran out of diesel. Just been sat a couple of months since I got my new car. Was doing 1500 miles/month with no issues prior to that.

How old is the battery? If it's been dead recently but just 'charged', it may still be in a bad way and sucking the juice from any battery or jump starter you attach to it. Had it a couple of times, once on my 205 diesel. Big old diesels take a lot of juice to get the plugs hot then crank over.

If it's turning over but not much enthusiasm, this would be my bet...

White smoke normally signifies the election of a new pope...

My guess would be either the battery or that the pressure in the diesel rial has dropped. Under the rear seat, there's usually a manual pressure primer for the tank. Try and give it a few pumps and try again.

It's probably just sad about the new car and staging a wee french protest.

Could be anything mate get it checked properly. I was recently in a car that had similar symptoms and called the AA. First guy diagnosed it as a faulty abs pump ecu said it would cost about a grand to fix and arranged for it to be towed. Yet the guy who turned up did his own checks found a faulty relay and away we went.

Has the fuel cut off solenoid been tripped when the battery has gone flat?

Don't think there's a fuel cutoff solenoid on these. It's all ECU trickery.
