[Closed] car wing mirror smashed off

Went out to the car just now, to find the wing mirror in several pieces down the road (parked perfectly legally on a straight wide piece of residential road). Needless to say, no note left and no witnesses. Clearly been clipped by a passing car, looks like a white or grey based on the colour marks left on the bit that's hanging off.

Have I any come back? Failure to report an accident whether wittingly or in ignorance is a crime, isn't it, do I get a crime number off the police 101 or online and then get insurance involved? Or just straight to insurance? Tough to suck up; electric, heated, body coloured is likely to be a few hundred I'd have thought?

Just buy a new one, no point losing no-claims.

Try knocking on some of the surrounding houses and seeing if any curtain twitchers saw anything ?

Otherwise I guess it's a case of seeing how much to replace and decide if going down the insurance route is worthwhile.

what car?

Had ours knocked off the Golf and the main dealer quoted £300. I got one off ebay for £50 and then a garage fitted it for about the same. Heated, electric, have to take half the car apart to plug it in.

Excess was more than that and didn't affect premiums.

Just suck it up, the Police won't be interested, no chance whatsoever of finding the culprit, and your excess will be about the cost of a new one.
Google breakers yards or spares specialists, it's quite likely you can get a correct colour one from a wrecker of the same model.
eBay might be a good place to look as well.
I had two alloys on my Octavia trashed by potholes, a new wheel was around £300, found a set of four for £80 through Briskoda, so try owners clubs for your car as well.
Out of interest, what car is it?

Bummer - I've had a similar situation, but managed to chase after the delivery van and get it to stop. Even then it was a lengthy nightmare. On the scene, the driver admitted he'd walloped my mirror (taking off the whole unit and stripping paint off the pillar), but his business insurers still fought it for months.

I agree with what's already been said. Forget the police - they're really not arsed about this kind of thing - and source the cheapest replacement out there, all the while cursing the git who did it.

Have a look around on eBay as suggested. Even if you don't fit it yourself you can take it to a local garage. You'll just lose your excess on an insurance claim and end up with raised premiums.

Mmmm, the distance the bits ended down the road suggest otherwise.

Good call on eBay, looks like won't be as expensive as I thought, but I'll still end up about £120 out of pocket because some people are ****ers.

Depending on how old the car maybe try some local breakers. Can be cheaper as you dont have the postage and you can see the condition and haggle 🙂

Some swear word did the same to me last month.
£150 to repair...swear swear swear.
As the others have said suck it up......and become a little more bitter inside.

Had mine smashed off recently. Annoying but not a lot you can do. Bought the plastic bits and new glass of eBay for 50 quid and pieced it back together. It is c%$ery of the highest order but no chance of anything getting done.

I did notify police in my case as the road leads to a dead end so almost certain it was one of the neighbours or a visitor so kept and eye out in case I spotted a blue car with tanned in wing mirror.
