Car warranty repair - slightly out of pocket

The EV has gone into Hyundai for a repair related to its ESP. They've hired us a replacement which is a diesel Kia Sportage, given the requirement was for an automatic, whilst they wait for a part.

Now I will stress that this isn't a big deal, and this is not a whinge, more speculative, but we're out of pocket by about £16 a week due to the higher fuel costs, and it's been three already with no sign of the part.

Do you all reckon I'm justified in asking for a change of vehicle or maybe a voucher against the next service or something? Hyundai seem to have a hire contract with Thrifty and they don't advertise any EVs for hire.

id have believed it more if you tried to argue that they were forcing you to kill babies driving a diesel.

in this case your lucky they didnt just put you on the bus - its also an automatic.

I'd ask nicely, but not make a fuss if they said no. How long are you expecting to have the diesel for?

Not sure my wife can do her job if she pulls over 2/3 of the way to work.

You can ask and see if they can provide something more economical... getting £16/wk back after the fact ... see Rule 1 ???

I know it's not your fault but I see anything I get under warranty as a bonus TBH... don't rely on it and you won't be disappointed.

Believe it or not I just had 2 warranty replacements this week for stuff without asking/claiming warranty. (Granted both very cheap for the companies)
One was the valve on a Vango self inflating... it's under warranty but I'd rather just have the use not wait. They said contact who you bought it from and claim warranty, I told them I'd happily pay rather than mess about and they just sent it for free (incl. post) didn't even ask for proof or date of purchase... So I'm a bit surprised but in a good way ...

The other was a small clip/pin that holds the SUP main fin in... truth is I think son's mother wrecked it and they could justifiably have got out of it but I took the same approach "Hi can I buy one of these" (must literally be 3g of plastic) - they asked for the order number and just sent it.

If I was you I'd ask if they can give you something more economic and say its costing you money... see what they come up with. I suspect you'd rather just get your EV back ASAP with minimum fuss and waiting?

Absolutely. But rather than ask them, trawl it round the local newspapers and get them to run it as a story with you pictured next to the car with a sad face on, maybe with pockets turned out or an empty wallet in hand?

I know somebody who had his Tesla Model X in for repair for several weeks (truck backed into it) quite a few years ago ago when Tesla's were rare beasts on the road, 2015 I think. Because of the rarity / cost the insurance group was top wack so he got a 911 turbo as the like for like hire car. Cost him a fortune in fuel in comparison, but the insurance co eventually conceded and refunded him. Good luck with that from the dealer though!

when my Model S suffered a ‘single vehicle’ incident not of my doing back in 2018 I got a tiny little petrol car from the insurers.

‘Thankfully’ it had an automatic gearbox. Also it wasn’t a VAG. It lacked the same kind of acceleration and economy as the Model S though.

Tesla parts were (probably still are) very much ‘just in time’ and spares were/are uncommon. After 6 weeks Enterprise rang me almost daily to ask for the car back. I referred them to the insurers. I think it was about 8 weeks in the shop mostly waiting on a fog lamp or something.

Good luck on getting some fuel subsidy @molgrips

Perhaps your calculation should allocate a value to the miles your EV isn't doing while broken.

Offset the diesel cost against the mileage saved on your own car. You're probly ahead of the game...

Yes. My Kia dumped it's hydraulic fluid on the floor at the beginning of August. It's just gone in to the dealer to see if it's covered under warranty. None of the local Kia dealers were taking in recoveries and they weren't offering courtesy cars in the mean time.

What's it say in your contract / warranty? You usually pay extra for 'like-for-like' courtesy cars.

I had a similar problem with my Countryman PHEV last year. Local dealer loaned me a 530e for three weeks.

That definitely used more fuel.

I'm now feeling like a fool for not asking for a refund... Actually I'm not really 🤣

If it's any consolation when my 12 month old Golf had a fried ECU and was stuck at the dealer for 10 days the only way I could get to and from work was to go and borrow a car from the dealer each night and drop it back in the morning because the courtesy and demo fleets were fully booked during the day by advance service bookings. That meant an hour of walking on top of my 70mile round trip in the car.

Warranties don't usually cover consequential loss so I'd say count yourself lucky you got a sensibly sized auto car and take the hit.

It was all bodywork and fancy-dan sensors for the autonomous driving. Nothing to do with it being an EV, everything to do with Tesla and them not carrying spares in the Uk. Everything had to be shipped from the US. Don’t know if that has changed now given they are ubiquitous on the road…
