I have googled but not finding the answer. My dad died week before last and we couldn’t find the V5 for his car before taking it to webuyanycar. So it’s in the process of being transferred to me, to sell on my mums behalf as executor. I today got a VED refund of £17.50. I hope to get the new V5 in the next week to then drive it nearby webuyanycar, which is 20 mins from their house. What do I need to do to be legal for that journey from a road tax point of view ?
It is still insured for another 2.5 weeks under his insurance so I can drive it 3rd party on mine. It’s an 11 plate Passat Estate diesel with at least one ding in every body panel so only worth about 2.5k max.
To be road legal the car has to be taxed. So it's going to cost you 1 months excise duty.
It might be cheaper for them to come to you.
You’ll need to re tax it for six months then probably loose two months of it when they refund it.
I’d also check that the insurance taken out by a deceased person is still valid.
Don't sell it to that lot.
Thanks for info, looks like I’ll tax online once I have the paperwork. Greg, I know what you mean but it’s a mountain of stuff to get rid of to help my mum move house and the car is just a wee bit of it. As an aside, his service was today and we opted for their local Clyde Coast Crematorium down towards your ‘Shire. What a stunning place, especially with snow and sunshine. Lifetime memories.. the Old Man, in a peaceful box, stunning natural light, Arran snowy hills right behind him out full height windows ..
Edit - yes, checked with insurance and all ok within 30 days of my notification of his death, I have fully comp on my own policy and can drive his 3rd party within that 30 days.
Out of interest how much are webuyanycar giving you for it? I bet someone on here would take it off your hands.
I'm half tempted to make you an offer but I'm strictly forbidden.
Did you cancle the tax AFTER the 1st of Jan? If so then you have in fact paid for the whole of January, since they will only reimburse whole months. So get it driven before the 1st of Feb.
^^^ online they say 3.6k, but it has so many dents from his erratic driving up till he recinded his license 10 months ago I reckon they will slash it once they see it. He bought it from LexLeasing when it was about 4 yrs old and dithered about in it for a few years. Nice leather black interior though full of cobwebs and 92k so lots of life’s left in it. DPF light is on so that may be a costly thing for someone. TBH we just need shot of it..
Welshfarmer - that’s great info and may be just what I need !
Double check it with the DVLA, I'd be surprised if it was still valid after they'd refunded it, even if it wasn't refunded for that month. You have to have insurance and MOT before you can tax it, so if his policy is canceled and it's in your mum's name then I suspect you might still end up in a situation where computer says no.
Would it not just be easier to get it towed? Takes all the unknowns and what-ifs out of it.
Iain, fair enough mate, understandable money is pretty insignificant at times like this...
Sounds like a nice day too mate, all the best.

Hmmm, food for thought. His insurance company said it would remain valid such that I could drive 3rd party on my fully comp insurance (different insurance co) for 30 days. It has 8 months or so MOT. V5 will arrive in next week or so in my name. Arghh....
Cheers G, wanna buy a sprawling huge house in Lochwinnoch ? 😜
Book an MoT close to where you're taking it. 🙂
It a bit of a maverick suggestion but... the penalty would only be £40 if you were caught driving it with out VED (presuming you paid it promptly). You could just risk the biscuit for all the fanny about it would be to tax and untax it again for one journey.
Might only cost £40 - £50 to get it towed too though

This will let you check if the tax is actually valid for January.

I was about to suggest just driving the 20 miles with no VED. It's extremely unlikely that you'll be stopped. A year or two ago I drove the best part of 400 miles on motorways to my parents house, followed by 70 miles the next day in to central London, at which point I picked up my post to discover that my VED had expired two weeks earlier!
As said above, even in the event that you were stopped the worst you could expect is a small fine.

They're part of Bridgend and gave us a better price than WBAC. Irvine, Kilmarnock or Prestwick.
My top tip, take your car there in the snow, they didn't even drive it or spot the rust.
Tax vehicle online with direct debit the day you are going drive it then cancel the direct debit later that day and you shouldn't need to pay a thing

I took my old transit connect van there, guy went through it wi a fine toothcomb, his software told him I'd have to give him 50 quid to take it away! 🙂
Stuck it on ebay, got 800 quid for it.
