Car Transport - To Take Car To Specialist

I currently have a car in storage which I want to get to a specialist many hours drive away - basically for an overhaul, some mods and MOT.

I could trailer it down then train down and drive it home.

However, also considering using a car transport company to take it to the specialist for me. It's not a big car - Elise sized.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

What state is it in now? You can drive to a pre-booked MOT

Try on time automotive. Used a lot for shipping proto cars about.

Only a local one. You can't do a tour of the UK on the basis of a pre-booked MOT.

Elise sized

Sounds interesting - what is Elise sized without being an Elise ? Caterham ?

get a quote on shiply

Used it twice, for trade plater driver and beaver tail transport for a non runner at very reasonable cost.

Both times cheaper than a train ticket + fuel

Ask the specialist if they have someone they use or can recommend.

Re: avoiding the pre booked mot rule. You wouldn't be the first and you wouldn't be the last. I'd wager a significant number of privately imported JDM cars landing at docks in the UK have MOTs already booked a 'bit of a distance' away. That then get cancelled.

Sounds interesting – what is Elise sized without being an Elise ? Caterham ?

Exige? 😀 Evora? VX220?

VX220...suspension refresh, upgraded rad, decent heater, timing chain tensioners, water pump, fuel line check, full brake going over, etc, etc plus MOT. Potentially SC if any pennies left....

NE Scotland to Northants...

We used a company based in the Lake District to transport a car from Denny to Whaley Bridge.

PM if interested.

I used Anyvan to get a broken Fiesta from Cornwall back to Dorset for £200 on a Sunday (the most expensive day in their calendar).

Push it out of storage and call the AA?

I'm ashamed to say that's how I got a broken TR6 from Kent to Yorkshire back in the early 80s. The AA did recovery by relay back then so it was a series of drops and pick ups at a succession of godforsaken depots. Took about 16 hours IIRC.

If you've got a bit of time between now and when it needs to be at the garage then you should be bale to get it transported via a back-hauling website. They basically allow empty (or partially empty) lorries to add work onto their return trips, for far cheaper than a dedicated trip. I've used them for random stuff with my old work and never had any issues. Being relatively flexible is the key.

I used Shipley to get a 944 turbo rolling shell from Bolton to Reading. Was about 13 years ago and iirc it cost less then a tank of Shell E5 in said car costs today.

I met the guy for the pick up in Bolton and a couple of days later at my house.

Knowing your local - Speak to John at Kerr's recovery and transport

He will move your vehicle legally and insured. - goes up and down the UK weekly with cars in all directions from Aberdeen to Southampton. - and can carry 3-4 cars at a time so load sharing makes the price friendly.

I've used Shipley for shitboxes ....would I use it for a car worth actual money....sod that.

Probably, mate at work has just finished his conversion to SC on his VX220. Bumble bee yellow and black...

And the Jotuz (BMW V10 engined Lotus Exige) lives round here as well. Which is truly insane.)

Shiply sourced beaver tail, not a shitbox

Just do your due diligence. The VX220 is low, just make sure that is clear to your chosen transporter

Another recommendation for Shiply, used it a few years ago when I bought a mini down south.

All very easy, but someone needs to be there at each end of the trip

Not sure of the name of the transporter company, but they look like they could cope…

I used Shiply a couple of times, it's worked out well except for the last one, where the dickhead turned up with a van-based recovery rig that wasn't rated for the weight. That was a total pain. Every other's been good though.

Only a local one. You can’t do a tour of the UK on the basis of a pre-booked MOT.

You can't do a tour, but there's no legal limit on how far you can go and no requirement or mention of "local". That's only a protection for driving to an mot though, it doesn't help if the vehicle's unroadworthy. And there can be insurance considerations.
