MrsSB is collecting a car today.
It was first registered in March 2019 so I think it's just got 1 month left of it's first 5 years of car tax after which its going to be considerably cheaper.
I was thinking of paying by DD for one month, then SORN'ing it and then registering it again at what hopefully will be the lower rate.
Does that make sense...... Does it work..... Or is there no need?
Yeah makes sense. I don't think you'll need to SORN and re-register it as the new tax rate should just kick in when you re-tax ut. That is an assumption on my part.

You have to pay an extra £390 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ of more than £40,000. You do not have to pay this if you have a zero emission vehicle.
The list price is the published price of the vehicle before it’s registered for the first time. It’s the price before any discounts are applied.
You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).

Little update: I think it kinda depends on the cars ownership history....
If a car is bought and kept then the 5 years starts at the end of the first year (so the drop in tax is at 6 years)
But if a new car is re-registered after a few months (i.e. with a pre-registered car) then that brings the second registration forward to sooner than 12 months, so the drop in tax seems to be earlier than 6 years.
And yes, if paying by DD, then it gets adjusted automatically. So ours is the higher rate for 4 months and then drops to £15/month.
have you collected it now? If it’s not too late can you collect on the 1st as you’ll have to for Jan in full
Collected yesterday...... Mrs couldn't wait and we had to train down to London to collect and couldn't be arsed with the train strikes looming. TBH a months tax isn't exactly a deal breaker but I know what you mean!
