Got a safety recall letter through the other day, got the car booked in then found out it was likely to take all day to do. Would you expect the garage to pick up / drop off the car?

Doing it myself is a bit of a pain as the garage isn't that close and I'll need to get a taxi home and then back to pick it up again. I suppose I could cycle back, but it's about 45 mins each way,so 1.5-2 hours total out of my day, plus the 40 mins total to drive there/back.

I wouldn't expect them to pick the car up, but my garage (and the one I used previously) would drop me back home / work / station and pick me up again from same. I think that's fairly standard for most main dealers.

Have you asked them?

Jeff

I wouldn't expect a pick up.  If you are worried abut time/taxi costs, ask for a courtesy car while the work is being done.

Depends on the severity of the fault but at the very least I would expect them to give you a lift home if it's not easy to get to the garage. Same with a pickup when you have to retrieve the car

No.

But I'd expect a courtesy car.

Is it a BMW? Most people on the forums arare getting a loaner.

Or phone them and tell them it's smoking from behind the glovebox and they'll pick it up for you.

Na, it's a Mazda. Thanks all, I was wondering if I'd be cheeky if I asked for pick-up/drop-off and it seems it probably would be - hadn't thought about asking for a loaner though, think I'll give that a try!

My Mazda's in tomorrow, is it a diesel? They told me it's software only & I'm doing it as a while you wait as I find my dealer are wholly useless when it comes to organising courtesy cars etc.

Yeah, diesel. That's what I understood RE software, but the garage closest to me said it would take all day. However, they're bloody useless - managed to forget to get the MOT done when I first picked it up...

Just ask - for servicing I can get mine picked up or get a courtesy car if I book it in far enough in advance...

(I don't think I've ever done this as it's not that much of a hassle getting there).

Yeah, the garage I use for servicing pick up / drop off, but then I don't use the main (st)dealer for that so not sure if they even do it.

Check with your garage again, mine told me it should take less than an hour. It's not booked in 'til 15.00 so it can't be an all dayer.

If we're talking about airbags, I just had a quick Google (because it just reminded me about the letter I got a year ago...) and apparently it takes a few minutes to replace.*

Edit: clearly I missed the bit in the OP that said it will take all day...

*according to one source on the internets

Nothing to stop you asking for a pick up or a loan vehicle. The more you ask for, the more likely they'll be able to do it while you wait.

Hate that they want a car all day for a 30 minute job.

It's a recall so I'd absolutely be demanding a courtesy car, it's their fault you'll be inconvenienced.

my Mazda went back for a recall last year. Got a courtesy car for about £10 insurance payment - seemed worth it considering that ours is a 10 year old Mazda3 and the courtesy car was a brand spanker with all the bells and whistles.

I'd probably be asking them if it was vital it was done now or if it was ok to wait until it needed a service. Some of these recalls are don't to thousands of cars and the cars are called in on a rolling programme so the garages can cope. If the issue is one where some cars are knowingly being allowed to drive around for their turn for months I'd be inclined to wait until it is more convenient.

Aye - ask for a courtesy car. Although, as noted above this will add time into the equation. My local BMW dealer make me laugh as it normally adds an additional 3 weeks into the first available slot for whatever work needs doing.. despite not being able to move for bloody cars every time I go.. they're double parked, in disabled bays, on the verge, literally hundreds of BMW's littered about the place but there's none available for me to borrow for a few hours.

When I take mine for a service I can book pick up and drop offs or a courtesy car.  I usually go to the cinema which is near by to the garage. Just ask them it's not cheeky at all it's part of the package usually.

Mine will do a free collection and drop offf for any reason, but since they once returned it with a kerbed wheel, I’ve been dropping it off myself and doing a walk-round of the car with the service manager before leaving it with them. I don’t bother with the courtesy car, but they’ll always pay for a taxi if I want one.

Chances are it doesn't take all day they just book all the jobs in and do it as and when on the day. I tell my local Ford dealer (also useless) I need the car for work every day so needs booking in at a specified time. They usually moan but do it
