Our second/town/dog/bike car went in for its MOT & service yesterday - all ways a nail biting experience!

The car is a 2000 plate Peugeot 206. We have had the car for about 4/5 years and have put about 80k on the car in that time (current mileage 142k)

Over the summer the discs, pads & exhaust were replaced.

To my amazement the car passed its MOT all be needing a new tyre & a bulb. Bonus!

Now the advice bit.

The MOT man spotted that the OSR radius bearing had seized (I thought it might have been a bested shock). The car didn't fail on this as they were unable to guage if it had any play!

The garage have quoted between £200 & £400 to rectify seized bearing. I have got a couple of verbal quotes this morning and this seems fair for where I live 🙁

Now. Do I just put up with the bad ride (we do about 12k a year in it), get some mates round and see if we can rock/bounce it free 😕

Or just go for the repair and hope its towards the lower end of the scale?

We cannot really make do without a second car but equally £400 to get a car up to speed is less than the cost of a decent 2nd hand car.

But as Mrs LMTTM points out £400 now, perhaps the same again in a couple of months time.

Hmm.

Advice please?

You think you could get a better car for £400?

Are you able to easily access the bearing? Have you tried lubing it (is there a grease port?)

My experience of Pug radius arm bearings is that once there is any play in it, it needs doing. Costs sounds about right. If you manage to free it and there is signficiant play you will very quickly understand the meaning of 'bad handling'.....

the car is in the region of bangernomics. The key rule of bangernomics is

if it goes, don't fix it
if it doesn't go, only fix it if it costs less than the amount you can get out of a cash point in 1 go

both rules broken with this repair. Leave it as is. would you have noticed if it wasn't mentioned?

what could you sell the Pug for with a years MOT?

Maybe spend that plus the £400 for the repair on something newer?

No obvious port. Cars just aren't my area of knowledge.

I figured that if we could free it it might mean less work for the mechanic 😕

I knew something must be wrong. Thought perhaps seized shock which would have been simpler.

If it's seized, it's either completely devoid of grease, or (as in my case) the seals had perished and water had got into the joint and rusted/pitted/worn the pivot axle and bearing. IIRC, you buy the trailing arm and bearing as one complete unit and the amount of spacers/washers/shims makes the whole job a bit of an ar$e.

So, in direct answer to your Q..... not great....
