Hi all,
In Ireland for a couple of weeks and looking to rent a car, which I have little experience of.
There's quite a big difference between renting directly from a company and a third party. Is there a good reason for that?
Is it best to buy the excess from a third party? It certainly seems cheaper.
Any do/dont's I should be aware of? Any recommendations for insurnace/agency/companies? Anything small will do, carwise.
Cheers
If you go through a third party you don't always know all the t&cs. We got a bit stung using easyJet as the hire co they used had limited mileage and to up it was almost as much as the rental. If you aren't doing anything complicated then I wouldn't worry too much. Worth getting excess insurance from a third party.
Driving in Ireland is pretty relaxed. Just watch out for the toll roads around Dublin.
I normally just go on kayak, and pick a name I recognise. The rate they get with avis (or whomever) is just a better rate - you'll get the same car. If you're going with a big player its worth signing up to their loyalty scheme as it normally lets you skip the queue at the airport. Get the excess cover from a 3rd party - a bit more faff if you have to claim but not significant
Car hire firms in Ireland can be very aggressive with claiming the prebooked insurance, credit card insurance, or separate policy insurance isn't valid. They have also been pretty bad about making up damage.

I know that thread is 10 years old but the same malarkey was going on recently
