Someone accidentally scraped past my car in carpark and have left what I hope is their number.

What details do I need to ask them and what if any do I need to give them?

Can’t you, of all of us, just polish it out?

With their car? or themselves / trolley/ pram....?

If you want to claim then you need their insurance details, etc. If you don't (remembering that technically you should still report to your insurer, and failure to do so technically could invalidate your insurance),  then ask them what they want to do about it - could it be done by Chipsaway and they offer to pay for that rather than have to make a claim on their insurance, for example.

[edit - seen your response to above. If not chipsaway-able then I suspect you'll need to at the least get a quote for a bodyshop repair and then get the other party to decide if they want to pay it or make a claim]

Absolute minimum is their reg number. They may offer to do it outside of insurance (not an unreasonable request, especially if minor) but you really want that reg number in case it goes sideways and you get your own insurance company involved.

Ideally name and address of the driver (and policy holder, if different) too

Can I get their name and address ? It's by their car. It's hopefully just a paint repair.

Edit: reg as a minimum makes sense. Thanks

Legally, yes.

If you’re in an accident
If you have an accident causing damage or injury you must give the following to anyone with ‘reasonable grounds for requiring them’, for example an insurance company:

- your name and address
- the vehicle registration number
- You also need to give the owner’s name and address if the vehicle is not yours.

You must report the accident to the police within 24 hours if you do not give your details at the time of the accident.

You must also report the accident to your insurance company, even if you’re not planning to make a claim.

In more modern times I've seen it argued that other contact details may suffice in place of address, but that's what Gov site says. And leaving a number probably is in the spirit of giving details at time of accident, so police don't need to be informed.

I assume don't have to give them my name or address?

Assuming they scraped it with their car and it was a public carpark what they are legally required to provided are the driver's and owner's name and address and the reg number of the vehicle.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/170

Insurance details only legally required if there is an injury caused. But assuming there is a claim going in it would make sense to swap insurer details as well.

Was it an SUV ?

🙂

We were at Dalby Forest at the WE. A lady in a Range Rover reversed over my Scott Spark as we were loading the van to leave. She got out, told me it was my fault and drove off refusing to give me any details. North Yorks Police were most excellent, they gave me her details, phoned her up, gave her a bollocking and she then subsequently reported the incident to her insurers, who were then expecting my call. Fairly minor damage luckily and if she'd been nice I'd probably have not bothered claiming and just fixed it DIY. However, she was a grade A dick, so she's going to loose no claims as a result. Weird thing was, she had a 10 year old son with her who was really apologetic and upset that her Mum had run over my bike. She, on the other hand, didn't give a f***.
