Hello, have a little kangoo van, when I start the car I get a short 1second 'quack' type noise from the engine bay...its a bit odd, any ideas please?
Never heard it until I recently had belts etc changed?

Is it a duck?
this thread is not going to go well.
i think you're quackers mate.
Is it a duck?
you'd have to be quackers to think that.
[edit] too late with the quackers joke.
Does it smell fowl?
Have you tried feathering the throttle?
I fear it could result in a hefty bill.
Don't get down about it.
Eider get a mate to put his head under the bonnet when you start it up.
Yes, let someone have a gander at it.
Kangaroo making duck noise you say?
We had a Rover with a fan belt that sounded like a canary, I called Rolf Harris and then saught psychiatric help.
don't go swanning into any garages, demanding a fix - it's goosed 🙁
that's enough ruddy duck jokes.
Do you wear a cygnet ring?
Were you ugly when you were small?
Bah.....funny men 😀
Any real mechanics?
Sorry for not getting into the spirit of the thread but:
Starter motor not disengaging immediately.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
But yes, that doesn't sound far off.
Yep, sounds like the inertia mechanism on SM is Mullard 😉
I see thank you! Easy to fix or replace starter motor?
Guessing it will eventually knacker the starter?
Common problem with these. I fear your goose is cooked.
problem you'll have is that the teeth on the flywheel may get damaged if you don;t get the starter sorted - and then it'll get expensive to fix.
Is it the Platypus valve? Hefty bill if you cant duck it.
If it's a dead duck, the noise problem is fixed?
Unless it's a ....ghost duck....
Could also be a slipping belt now that the weather is a bit colder.
However, it is French, so you may as well get used to it making funny noises.
If it's the starter it could mean a big bill, so you won't be able to swan around in your van. If it's French, does it it quack in pidgin English?
Guessing it will eventually knacker the starter?
Kanckered?
It'll be totally Donald Ducked mate.
Malfunctioning audible low obstacle warning?
Before the engine fires? Fuel pump.
After engine fires? Starter. Take the starter off and lube it, so that it retracts properly. You can get gunge build-up. That sorts it 90% of the time. WD40 or GT85 to free it, then the lightest oil you have kicking about (chain lube works great).
Can I just say "sticky bendix" please - on-topicish, and one of my favourite phrases from mini-owning days
Try starting engine with clutch down then with clutch up; release bearing?
Or EGR valve opening and closing;servo vacuum loss? try pinching the hose to the EGR and see if it stops.
More than likely a loose drive belt. Give em a spray with WD40 and if noise goes away either tension or replace. It will have a pre engaged starter so need sticky bendix available.
Sounds like it could be a quack in the windscreen.
Did you buy it 2nd hand? Once Bittern, twice shy I always say.
Customer: My van makes a duck sound when I drive it.
Garage: What van is it?
Customer: Renault
Garage: French?
Customer: Cunard
Garage:Bloody right is it, I was terrible at language at School!
Make sure you pay the bill or they'll put you up in front of a beak.
Starter motor not disengaging immediately.
or not engaging would make the same noise?
....wow you folks must be bored! Very impressed with the duck related humour 😛
Thanks yeah starter motor makes sense I will take it off and have a clean, much appreciated, have to duck out now lots of chicks to pick up in my sweeet ride 😀
Enough of the wisequacks. Last thing the OP needs is to break down in this fowl weather.

He's right you know.
That's a feather in his cap.
Was it the starter motor walla? Have we got to the bottom of this mallard-y?
I hope this thread hasn't driven you daffy, or we'll all be treading on eggshells.
Did you find a new home for the duck (once you coaxed it out from under the bonnet)?
Come on guys and gulls, I'm sure we can keep this going.
OP, was it a quackastrophe orville the van start now?
Try not to get down about it.
he's been hatching a plan to get it fixed.
A 2002 Kangoo? That's almost old enough to be a classic. You should definately get this problem fixed, keep it in tip top condition.
One day it could be top of the bill in a classic car show, you might be sitting on a real nest-egg there.
Since it's French you canard-ly expect it to be reliable!
^ priceless!
