I've found this forum very useful for car-related info in the past, now I have a question of my own.
My car was hit by someone who very kindly left their details. Big scrape and dent on the rear quarter. Their insurance has declared it a non-structural write-off, but are offering us approximately the repair cost in payment for us keeping the car as it is (with a cat N applied).
I'm happy to make it good myself (not too concerned about the cosmetics of the car), but I'm not sure if there are any other consequences of accepting this. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks in advance!
Ask you insurer if they will keep the vehicle on cover and also if they will need an engineers report at renewal time
if the vehicle is subsequently written off as a result of another accident a deduction of around 20% will be made from the market value
My son had a similar situation. We bought the car back from the insurance for 10% of the value. Car valued at £750, minus £500 excess, minus £75 salvage leaves me with £175 in profit.
I had to MOT it to prove it was roadworthy. It only had scratches to the bumper so no work needed.
Insurance company have continued to insure it so everyone is happy.
As a private seller you don't have to declare it at time of selling.
Car was already a Cat D when I purchased it but doesn't seem to make much difference on a £500 17 year old car.
Normally just an Mot to prove its roadworthy, and if it gets written off again they'll make a deduction due to the fact it's worth less because it's already been written off once.
We have 2 Cat D cars, no issues with insuring or anything - although I do of course mention it.
This happened to me last August, still driving the car, as prawny says you’ll be asked to get it MOT’d again just to establish it’s roadworthy and you carry on as before.
Agree to it on the condition that they don't write it off - thus no hassle with an extra mot, declaring it in future etc. I've done this with cosmetic damage on cars before, just got a cheque for repairs
You don’t need to do anything with a cat N write off, just fix it if you want and keep on driving. There will be a salvage marker on the V5C which may well devalue the car in future.
