On another post I was looking at getting a Mitsubishi Pajaro (japanese import) as a cheap run around. The car was going to be a second car for me/something the gf could use.

The car is worth around a grand and is a 2.8 diesel. Lowest quote I could find (I apparently can't use my no claimes of 20 years on 2 cars) is £1100?

Obviously that isn't happening - do I have any other options because that strikes me as just down right silly money..Its 3 times more than I pay for my Porschse Boxter ffs.

Multicar policy, should let you use your NCD.

Have you tried some of the more specialist insurers. Adrian flux and NFU are options for 4x4s.

Do not insure with markerstudy.....flux mostly quote using them as underwriter....id rather take my chances uninsured after the way they have treated my family TWICE when they were insuring us in non fault accidents.

Anyway.

Speak to a broker, you can use your 20years ncb on a second car with specialists ( not on compare the meerkat insurers)

I have my no claims from the van duplicated on my classic car - afterall i cant drive both cars.......

Pajeros are notoriously a ballache to insure as most are imported and lots got stolen.....

Oh and when pajeros crash they make expensive messes, porsches twnd to disintagrate 😉

I've had similar experience, you can get multi-car policies but if the company which insurers the porker doesn't offer them you are in a bind. Find a company that offers 30% introductory ncb for good drivers and/or National Farmers Union (as @nick suggested)

The insurance is high because you are considered to pose an above average risk of claiming and/or that risk being of greater value than average.

Imported old 4x4's are not the most inviting vehicle to cover but there's possibly something else as well, area, your age, driving history, credit rating?

I get bugged by the No Claims Bonus bit.

I have 3 cars with 3 separate NCBs or 4, 7, 9+ years. I haven't claimed for 15+ years but the 2nd and 3rd cars were added 4 & 7 years ago and I wasn't allowed to use my existing NCB.

I checked with the insurance company.

Me: These are DEFINITELY SEPARATE NCBs and there is no way they can all be moved to 9+ years as they are not related in any way.

Them: Correct.

Me: If I claim on one car then are the other NCBs affected?

Them: Yes. Any claim on any policy will Zero all NCBs.

Me: So when it helps me to have them related they are unrelated and when it helps me to have them unrelated they are related.

Them: Yes.

I'd like to know who said that and the basis for it as it's utter b*****s (unless you have a badly worded & highly unusual multicar policy).

We recently bought a third car for carting round baby & all the associated paraphernalia.
The plan is to get rid of my Ibiza, but I need to clean it up & get it on Autotrader.
So, rang Admiral who I have the insurance through & assumed that no claims bonus applies the person rather than the policy.
But, no. The car that my Wife is named driver on and uses the most gets her NCB, and the car that I am named driver on & use the most gets my NCB - but the Ibiza that we are only insuring until we can get rid has no NCB and as a result costs a bloody fortune to insure, as we can't apply NCB to more than one car......gah!

Adrian Flux for 2 of them and Admiral for the other. Separate policies as I can't find a multicar policy to cover all three vehicles (A pickup, a 600BMP Mercedes & a bespoke built converted BMW).

Both companies say "Have you been involved in ANY vehicle accident resulting in a claim regardless of blame". It is not just for the car the policy covers

If you are fully comp on Car A but buy a cheapy to drive occasionally, are you covered 3rd party from the Car A policy while driving the cheapy?

If so, isnt the OP better off not insuring the cheapy if it costs more to insure than its value? If it gets nicked or crashed you'd have the 3rd party cover and effectively self-insure the cheapy (ie bear the brunt of repair/replace)

Nope, you have to have minimum third party cover on any vehicle you drive on a policy that entitles you to drive any other car and they all exclude any other cars owned by you!

no but its surprising how many believe this to be the case....

the stipulation usually is if you policy even allowws you to drive other cars third party (its not as common as it used to be) that the car must be otherwise insured by someone else who is not a partner/spouse - ive even seen it extended to must not live at the same address.

Try A Plan, my import Hilux Surf is £400, still not cheap but better than your quote.

The vehicles not that relevant.

The vehicles not that relevant.

They are not in most cases but they are is they are a bit 'different'.

Pick up trucks count as commercial vehicles even if you do not use them for that so are not possible to insure on a lot of normal policies.

Japanese imports are often a different spec to their UK equivalent so the replacement costs can be much higher. Probably not relevant in this case but a Jap spec Skyline Nismo Special Edition is very different costs to bog standard UK spec one.

If a car has been extensively modified or has alternative bodywork the associated costs change, especially if any damage to a panel requires re-manufacturing of the whole panel.

If a car has had significant tuning of engine, drive train and suspension then the risk and costs go up accordingly.

It is the same as 'most' peoples jobs don't affect the premium much but some unusual professions do - footballer and model really hit the premiums.

"Pick up trucks count as commercial vehicles "

Because if they didnt - you would be paying through the nose for VED......top rate iirc

commercial policies for domestic vehicles neednt be expensive - there are many insurers doing these now and its quite easy.

Insurance is mad I asked if I could use no claims from the car on a motorbike answer was no, which I understood but they said I would lose my motorcycle no claims bonus if I claimed on the car?? Madness

Also the Mrs had a no claims accident other party took full responsibility immediately their insurance sorted it quickly. But her insurance went up on renewal as she'd had an accident

And when my renewal came in she was a name driver so mine went up so I took her off as she has never driven it and they put it up again as I had lost my married discount 🙁
