[Closed] Car Insurance - why such a ball-ache?

I’ve just moved house, so looking to change / renew my car insurance and checking around for new quotes.

It’s a new build - but the address is registered with Royal Mail but none of the car insurance sites recognise it.

I called my insurer to update the address on one policy - they charged me £30 to make the change but sent the renewal through with the old address FFS.

Why does the list of occupations appear to have been last updated in the 1990s? I’m semi-retired with a small online business - that’s not a valid option. Is making something up to suit their silly check boxes not making a false declaration?

I’ve tried to get some other quotes and rapidly losing the will to live…spend ages bashing all the details in to get to the final quote screen to be told to call them…

Any recommendations on classic car insurance for my 1974 VW Camper that isn’t Adrian Flux/Just Kampers (both same company)?

For any type of 'special' risk e.g. classic vehicles etc. I'd suggest looking for a broker via the British Insurance Brokers Association here:

A few years back one of my team's jobs was to load quarterly postcode update files into the databases of a few insurers we used to provide IT services for - only people were lazy, no one checked and sometimes it could go a year without updates. So your problem is probably a lazy IT team...

I’ve decided I’m never moving house again (see also Broadband Pain thread).

My van insurance renewal coincided with my house move and my premium went from £250 to £950 because only one insurer would insure me due to “lack of credit history” at the new house. Yesterday I was able to get a much better quote and cancel the rip-off one within the cooling off period, as insurer’s systems started to recognise me at the new address. Still, ball ache is exactly right.

When I went through a fast hatch phase I used Greenlight who were very good - I don't know if they do camper insurance though. Have you tried Footman James?
