Odd query, but you never know...

I'm trying to organise temporary car insurance to borrow my dad's car when i visit the UK for a few weeks. His insurer won't add me to his policy.

All the quotes I'm getting specify I have to have been a "permanent UK resident for at least the last 12 months." I'm a British citizen, although I haven't lived in the UK since before the last 12 months.

Does anyone know if my citizenship trumps permanent residency? Will any insurance I purchase be void on a technicality such as this?

No web searches i've done leave me any the wiser.

Are you not insured on your own car insurance policy? Or can you add your Dad's car temporarily?

I live in Canada and I know my own car insurance covers me for car rental abroad. Not exactly the same I know, but it might be worth asking your own insurer...

Oh, I hadn’t thought of that it could make sense.

Hmmm, my girlfriend has been put on her (UK) families car insurance in the past without a problem, and it hasn't cost the family much to do that
(I don't know who their insurance broker is...)

Times change I guess have had no problem in past being added as a driver on mother in laws car when in Uk....Google tells me at least a couple of insurers who specialise in this area (presumably for a price) which is good news as hoping to be in UK for a year in next couple of years

Insure2drive.co.uk

@markgraylish - yes i've done that in the past, not sure why it won't work now. Maybe his age?

@antigee - i've tried with those two.

Maybe i'm just unlucky...

My insurer suggested my Dad gets an additional policy that will accept me as a named driver, then cancel it once i've gone.

The insurer decides who they want to cover, not a question of citizenship.

Someone will be able to arrange cover, even if its a temporary and expensive separate policy.

I have been completely unable to find a way to insure my partner on my car until he’s resident here. Hiring a car for him seems to be the only solution. If anyone finds a solution it would be great to hear it!

The best option i'm finding (good thing it's been quiet at work today 🙂 ) seems to be through https://msm.safelyinsured.co.uk/

I can get quotes that will accept me so may work for you Hannah... but I can't purchase the insurance until i'm on the ground in Blighty (FFS), or presumably using a VPN. So I guess that will kill some time at Heathrow after 24 hours travel.

Try phoning Keith Michaels Plc- they were the only company I found who could offer insurance when I was in a similar situation
