I just thought I'd see what the increase in my car insurance premiums might be (about 80% by the looks of it FFS🙄) but I was playing around with the options and discovered that adding a courtesy car actually reduced the price by £30.

Every little helps.. 🙂

Apparently, if you get quotes exactly 21 days prior to the end of your current policy, it's less. Because people who leave it to the last moment are riskier, apparently. (according to Money Saving Expert bloke).

He also said that in some cases, quotes for third party only were higher than full comp, for the same reason. It's actuarial madness!

Adding my partner as a named driver and me to her's, reduces both of ours slightly.

Oh I also will never use extra excess, to reduce the quote, as I ended up once paying the majority of a small claim, even though I had full comp insurance. Also the reduction in premium is minimal IME

Yes 21 days is the sweet spot. Mine’s not due till Feb but I put a 21 days from today start date in just to try and compare. I know that adding a second named driver can sometimes help too.

Definitely consider adding 'low risk' people. I and my sister are on my elderly fathers insurance to knock £300 a year off - I drive it at least once a year as a matter of principle...

Play with where it is kept - ours are cheaper on the street overnight than on the driveway overnight. 🤷‍♀️

I've been using Quidco comparison for the last few years to good effect. Currently giving £45 cash back

Experiment with different occupations - not to the point of lying, just that you may find several in the list that are equally applicable to what you do. be lower risk / cheaper than others.

Try different professions if you can too. I can quite legitimately claim I’m about 3 different professions on the standard drop-down list. One of them gives a cheaper premium than the others.

I've just had my renewal through recently with LV £280 last year, this year £470

I've tried Direct Line, Go Compare, Money Supermarket. All of them are coming out £650 +

Someone willing to consider their car as totally disposable and nominally worthless? yeah I would consider that a risk.

If you always buy/include Motor Legal Protection, and you buy additional legal cover with your home insurance, check if those covers overlap. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. You might save the cost of one of them though.

Saying you park in a garage is often seen as riskier than parking on the drive/road - as folk who park in garages are more likely to claim (they usually 'over-care' about their cars) and they also scrape them on doorframes etc plus , drop stuff on them, like paint, ladders...

I've had one through this morning, that say's 'three weeks to go'. Anyway, despite the initial excitement, it's only a quote with me/wife/daughter on a 12 year old Aygo we have for the kids, so out of date. Daughter has her second driving test this week, so changing her details ramps up the insurance more (full from provisional), despite son being the risk - 4 points and a no fault claim.

Looking at over double - Gone from £70 to nearer £170 - still awaiting the renewal quote from my insurer, plus the outcome of daughter's test. My car is currently £17 per month FFS.

Nuts. Playing round, even Third Party makes no difference.

No, it is statistically sound and common sense.

As for passing test, as you must know from your son, this is *massive* for the first couple of years. We have had 5 years of £1k+ premiums on a 11 year old Seat estate with a ridiculously low insurance group and risk factors, no points, no bumps etc.

I also think your son is a massive cost - remember a claim sits 'on your record' for 5 years, and points are a stinger on cost.

My son added £200 to the premium last year with his points. Going to have to suck this up I think. Son uses it for commuting when his car is broken (uses it on track days and it's stripped out - usually wears something big out) and daughter only likely to nip to shops in it at weekends.

I may get rid of my car next year as it's not used much (I commute on my bike), and we're getting rid of our static caravan, so really won't be used.

Some insurers see spouse/partner/civil partner as the same for discounting purposes, provided both on the policy. Obvs if your other half has 5 claims and 5 convictions that may not be cheaper anyway 😂

Renewal notice came through from existing insurer - gone up about 10% which is OK. I've up-dated the policy with my daughter (she passed her test this morning) and it's climbed again by another 10%.  Can't complain as it's £1k for a 13 year old Aygo, was about £800 last year.  Any comparison quotes have been coming in near £2k. Been with existing company for this car, two years, and it has gone up from £600 from that first year.

Seeing as I was paying £110 a month for the last few years, I think he has a bargain.

Flippin' 18 year old new drivers...even worse when you have three of them in quick succession.

😁👍
Anyway, the serious point is that all you who are thinking of clicking the little drop-down boxes on comparethemeerkats.market (etc) and changing your details between single/married/shacked up/jobs, should be aware that your movements online during the quote may be tracked and that this information can be used to identify whether you've been a bit 'fraudy' in your application. This'll come up at claim time usually.

Does anyone know what happens to an auto renewal if you sign up with someone else instead? Does the "insurers database" get updated so that the renewal doesn't happen or is it still necessary to phone up and cancel the renewal?

many years ago i picked up my first and only speeding offence - an SP50. naturally i called the insurer to inform them. It had a small impact on my premium - £30 in my favour!

With auto renewal, you need to cancel the insurance if you go with someone else.

Probably not helpful, but a friend was saying today that her 1957 concourse Beetle is on a classic policy for £88 a year.

Having a Tesco clubcard knocked £50 off our last quote on confused.com (only with Tesco insurance obviously!)

Also you get a £20 voucher buying through confused - went for the Halfords voucher, and got some new Shimano M520 pedals for £5.99 😁

Nope. On you to cancel one. Some insurers, if you cancel within a specified timescale (e.g. 30 days) will give you full refund of anything paid IF you took out alternative insurance from the renewal date itself. If not, you may still need to pay for time on risk/cover. Some ask for proof, others don't.

Ours was more expensive on the drive than on the street at one point. Houses round here have very steep drives so I guess there have been a few claims in the postcode for cars rolling off drives!

Probably more likely that claims are made hitting walls, hedges, gate-posts, etc.

Buying a Porsche can save you money on your car insurance, honestly!

The quotes I got when I looked at buying a Porsche were super low, others have said the same on here

😂

I just got an email today from Brentacre telling me that after 10 years of insurance with them, with no claims, that they can no longer insure my 2011 Caddy 🤷

Had been costing me around £600, cheapest I can find is £1250. Nothing whatsoever has changed with my circumstances.

Won't be able to hit this 21 day sweet spot cos I'm away, but hopefully I'll find an 18 day spot 🙄

Lowered (improved haha), but declared for the past 5 years, never caused an issue, no other mods.

No idea why the other quotes are so high 😔
