So then, looking at a car I'm keen on this Saturday, thing is I'm prepared to walk if the deals not right but if it is, what would you normally do about insurance? Previously I've always gone back within the next few days to pick it up once the garage have prepped it, but not looking at doing that.

Current insurance will cover me for £35 and thats for 7 days, but I don't really want to commit to that.

Can someone who is insured to drive another persons car with their permission legally drive it and be covered insurance wise?

Cheers

Not as far as I'm aware. The car needs to have insurance.

Do it over the phone on the spot if you decide to buy it.

Go in the morning ?

Can't.

After a bit more googling it looks like my choices are either go back another day to collect or drive home and leave it on the drive uninsured till Monday.

Can you not make amendments online on the spot with your a smartphone? Or at least sort an online account now so that you can?

So you could spend £35 and buy the car, so fine. Or spend £35 and don't buy the car, so you've wasted/lost £35.

Your money, your risk.

What if you didn't spend the £35 and bought the car, and then it was stolen from your drive?

Ask the gargage, they might well have 7 days insurance for this very purpose.

As Neil's says. On new cars this seems to be the norm, so they can register and tax it?

or drive home and leave it on the drive uninsured till Monday.

Please don't drive it home uninsured if that is what you are suggesting as one of your options (and apologies if I've mis-read your post). Not worth the risk. If you were unlucky enough to be stopped it would cost you a lot more than £35 in fines, release fees etc.

Is the car taxed? Quite often garages tax the vehicle once it is sold and need your proof of insurance to do this.

£35 doesn't seem to be a huge amount to pay in case you do decide to buy it or have you asked your insurer if they'll do you a favour and refund the £35 if you decide not to go ahead with the purchase - explain you are going Sat afternoon so will not be able to speak to them on the spot?
