Hello again,

More questions 😉

When you get a car insurance quote - do they actively check your imployment ?

Im not working at the momment, although i have the offer of a job at a Garage working for a friend a couple of hours a week.

If i enter i am employed the insurance is £300 cheaper - which would pay for the car tax and x 2 tanks of fuel....

What do you reckon ?

I don't think they actively check, but from what I've heard, it's best to be honest when getting your quotes. While they might sort a small claim with no major questions, if it came to a write-off, loss-adjusters have a canny knack of weeding out anything that would give the insurance company a chance to deny your claim. This would leave you with a big bill (even bigger if someone else's car is involved) and you'll be on the "insurance database" as having fibbed in a previous policy.

Your risk my friend.

Yeah, i could understand saying your employed if your not would be bad - but once it's insured/taxed i'll be off to the garage to work at the potenial job offer...

AFAIK no when I last insured I had been made redundant and they put down my last job, not sure i'd put motor trade though.

What puzzles me is the different costs for different professions?? My specific job is never on their lists and could be very broadly described.

It's due to the risk i think. For example your more at risk of having an accident going to certain jobs than others.

If you have lied about anything that will affect your premium, it will nullify your insurance if you make a claim and they find out.

Though I've not heard of many people working for friends in the motor trade who need their own car insurance policy *cough* (ex claims manager with a brother in law who does some small scale car dealing via his employers motor trade policy!)

Yes, I did forget, if you're anywhere near the motor trade, you need to say...likely your premium might be higher anyway

If you say your employed and you then have to claim and they discover you weren't (you never know what the nature of the claim might be so they may check this fact), then your insurance will be invalid leaving you exposed to unlimited claims against you in the event of a claim for damage to cars, propert, people etc.

If you tell them the truth now, and your situation changes in the coming days / weeks / months, call them and tell them, and they should amend your premium to the revised rate, meaning you'll only be paying the higher rate for as long as you're not employed.

If you want a good price, try Lloyds TSB Compare - recently named best car insurance comparison site.

LOL - I'm saying nothing, but I used to have the joy of covering claims for East End "under the arches" motor traders, and you wouldn't believe the number of XR3i that got written off by the proprietors kids whilst road testing after some repair work at 3am on a Sunday morning.

We used to spend a lot of time trying to find a gap in the small print to catch them on...win some, lose some.

I suspect that insurers are more switched on now than we were then - worryingly, now 15 years or so ago!

if they can void your insurance, they will, theyre looking to make money.
i think its less "up to you to find a loophole"
more "up to you to close every loophole they may find"
i wouldnt be so fussed, but them invalidating your insurance, means you were driving without insurance, and that wont stand up too well if some clart steps under your wheels and you end up doing them some serious damage, even if its not your fault

If i were you, i'd shop about a bit more if thats how much extra you're getting charged for not working!
I took up a policy with Norwich Union because they were 40-60% cheaper than other companys, which didnt like the fact that i wasnt working!!!

Try this link to the money saver site that helps you modify your job title to get cheaper insurance, while not lying, just changing the description.
