You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Evening all. I'm about to hand back my company car after just under 3 years. Prior to that I had 10 years NCD on a private vehicle as at March '20.
Now that I'm trying to insure a private vehicle again I'm finding that the vast majority of insurers only accept NCD that is up to 2 years old.. I was previously insured with Adrian Flux at a really competitive rate so rang them and they said they'd accept up to 3 years old, happy days.. BUT the quote was astronomical.
Has anyone been in this situation before? Does anyone know any insurers that accept up to 3 years old NCD? I'm worried that I'm staring down the barrel of starting from scratch which doesn't feel right given what is nearly 13 years of claim free driving.
Any advice very much appreciated
Thanks
I've known companies insurer offer those no claims "credits". I've also known companies that self insure provide a letter from the company claims manager stating you've had no claims which insurance companies my accept.
Thank you @onzadog. I popped in 2 years of named co car evidence onto a comparison site and the results aren't too bad.. I'm going to ring an insurance broker in the morning and see if they can do better and/or take into account the 10 years prior to that.
I had considerably longer of CC ownership and hence no NCD of my own when I gave mine up, but a letter from the fleet manager got converted into a reasonable NCD. I used a bricks and mortar broker at that time, it was a bit before the rise of all the comparison sites.
You should still accrue NCD on a company car (or at least, I did). Talk to HR / your Fleet Manager / the lease company.
Thank you for the replies all. The work lease co have said they can provide a 'claims history letter' which sounds like it will serve the purpose of evidence for named company car driver no claims (as it is stated on the comparison sites).
The comparison site won't accept the 10 years NCD prior to the co car as it's more than 2 years old and the letter from the lease co is not considered bona fide NCD so it doesn't just accumulate unfortunately. However, the difference in quotes between the two scenarios is <£100.
Ideally an insurance broker would be able to stitch the 2 together but at least I now have a backup quote which is not unreasonable.
Thanks again all.
I insured a car with zero NCB last year as I've been. Driving a classic for the last 10 years....
The difference between 0ncb and the appropriate amount of driving experiance was 20 quid.
But I did have to speak to a human and leave the comparison sites alone.... But having had a classic I was used to that
When I changed from a company car to my own, I had the letter from my fleet manager saying I had a clean record for 7 years.
Insured online to say I’d accumulated 7 years & it was accepted and was never asked to provide the details.
IIRC it also had an option of staying of your were claiming a certain amount of NCD years based on being insured on another vehicle. If you have an other half & are insured on their car that may help.
When I got the company car I had c6 years NCD on my own car that was going to be sold. The insurance co said the NCD would be valid for a year or two then would expire.
I contemplated getting a cheap car to insure but decided it was too much hassle. 7 years of cost free driving (the fuel I saved on the commute outweighed the tax) was more than enough to compensate any difference had I had to start from scratch.
Thank you for the continued responses. I'm definitely going to speak to a human tomorrow and see if I can do better than the quotes I have saved from the comparison sites. I'm a bit shocked at how (relatively) little difference the NCD makes. Not as shocked as I am at the quote from my previous insurer who are 'honouring' the 10 years NCD I had with them! All they could say was "its the market and type of car" even though the type of car is nearly identical to the one I used to insure with them FFS.
Believe Aviva were one of the few who would accept NCD upto three years, though they may have changed their policy. Worth getting a quote from their direct arm.
Thank you sandwicheater but unfortunately Aviva is now 2 years as well 😐
Have you actually got quotes for with and without a hypothetical NCD?
After a crash that wrote my car off, without "protected" NCD, my insurance went up by less than the cost of a tank of diesel.
Yeah it’s less than a hundred quid between 10 years NCD and 2 years company car no claims history. Much less than I thought but still gonna ring around see if I can get it down a bit. Cheers
Update. Ended up going with a quote from a comparison site. After selecting zero years NCD it opened up a further question asking about company car, other cars I drive, etc. which is where I put the 2 years of co car use. It then generated a number of competitive quotes.
The quotes I received after speaking with some bricks and mortar brokers were nearly double the comparison site quote and the initial AF one was nearly treble! Astonishing when that quote was apparently recognising the 10 years NCD I Had with them previously. Crazy.
