Looking at a car for the eldest lad who passed his test before Xmas tomorrow . It’s a couple of hours away , so if it’s any good I would prefer it to come back with us.
We’ve run it through an insurance comparison site , and the most reasonable deals all insist on a plug in telematics system.
I have no problem with that , in fact if it makes him think more about his driving ways then all the better.
Car will be registered in his name ( he is buying it with his money ) and I am on there as a named driver. Does anyone know if you have to wait until you are in receipt of the “black box” ( self fit) before you drive the car ?
thanks
We went with Ticker when we had a test pass scenario!
From memory we didn't have to wait until the black box arrived.
Not in my experience, you can drive it before the box arrives.
Fadda jr had a (? Ticker) box last year, and opted to have one again in October for his second year to keep the costs down. The second one is with Hastings, and both were pain free to set up, arrived within a couple of days, and allowed driving before it arrived.
Cool. Thanks
Ticker was the cheapest when we looked a couple of days ago , then Hastings started popping up and are a couple of hundred cheaper too
I used Hastings with no problems. Oh, I still do, though they told me they didn't need the black box after a year. Shocking how badly you'd have to drive for their assessment to flag you - I rarely got it below about 90% and it's at something like 30% that they start to warn you (they said).

We didn't, but you must fit it ASAP when it does arrive
Myth #8: You can't drive your car until the black box is installed
Again, check with your provider – but most black box policies will not stop you from driving before the box is installed. You should still be able to drive with insurance cover from your policy start date.Providers usually request that you fit the device as soon as it arrives, and pair it with an app.

Car, VED , insurance and breakdown cover all purchased for just under £2.5k. Two hour drive home with the lad following from Westbury to Torquay was a bit unnerving on my part , but he did well . Mixture of back roads , A303 , M5 and A380 was a bit of a baptism of fire 🙂
