New car will be arriving soon so will have to sell the old one. Current car insurance will be transferred to new car leaving current car uninsured. Am I right in thinking even though I'm personally insured I will not be able to take it on test drives with would be buyers etc? It's parked on a drive so not on the road and is obviously still taxed.

Correct. The car needs to have its own insurance in place. I think you need to SORN it if its not insured as well.

Yup thats about it. Unlikely, but if the police are nearby and it flags as uninsured you're going to have an awkward conversion (+6 points and an IN10 potentially iirc)

Switch the insurance over to the new car, then add the old on as a Temporary Additional Vehicle for any time it will be on the road (although doing it in decent sized blocks is usually more cost effective to avoid admin charges)

Yep if it's not insured it needs to be sorned. "Continuous insurance enforcement" By the book.

Real world. I've never been hit for not sorning between insurances - i don't always renew at renewal as often I'm.not in the country so don't feel like paying to insure something that's parked off street nae being used that no one's going to steal - berlingos are great anti theft devices.

Call your insurance.

When I changed cars recently they said the old one was still insured for 2 weeks (I was giving it to my son, so just parked up) and to let them know once I'd sold it and/or insured by someone else.

As above.

I recently bought a new to me car, swapped the insurance over and added my old car for a couple of weeks. Sold old car and cancelled the cover on it.

I was able to keep my old car on the same insurance for about 8 weeks whilst I was trying to get it sold. Extended by a month at a time. Probably depends on the insurance company though.

Yeh they'll probably give you a bit of grace IF you ask them and explain, I wouldn't risk keeping quiet if you're gonna be test driving the old one, if it was just parked up waiting for collection I might risk it, but that's not technically above board.
