Our car is broken again but I want to take the kids over to the IoW for half term (as this has become a bit of a family tradition).

Does anyone know which hire firms charge the least for second drivers and which have no restrictions regarding the IoW ferry?  Any recommendations for a Gatwick pick up (closest location to me).   Thanks

I know it's not what you asked but I notice trains are direct to Portsmouth/Southsea so could you ferry/hovercraft over and hire on the island?

I wouldn't think to mention to a car hire company that i'm going on the IoW ferry. do they typically have restrictions?

depending on where exactly you are you might find a local company (there's a couple in brighton) is the cheapest option. Otherwise yeah, train + hovercraft (great for the kids) + rent one when you're there and need it

Yep I'm pretty sure the only thing a hire car co would ask is 'are you leaving the UK' and the answer is clearly no.

They mostly rent minicabs to the trade but they're cheap as chips. If you don't want a brand new car, they're great. About 15 mins from Gatwick on the train obvs.

Airport pickup is probably a premium.  Do Enterprise still deliver/collect at your door? you may find that cheaper than renting from the airport.  Not sure if its a company thing, but Avis had a scheme where if you were both registered on their "spam me for life" free membership scheme 2nd driver was free in the UK (subject to the usual >25, UK license, stuff).    I would not have expected any restrictions to take a car on a ferry.  But if @villageidiotdan is right about public transport / foot passenger / hire on the island is right then any "Island Premium" is potentially less than a return ferry trip.

Train/hovercraft/hire on the island seems like a good idea, it’s the only place I know of with a regular hovercraft service, and it’s where they were invented. I took one over and back when I went to the IoW Festival, because I wasn’t prepared to pay the cost of taking the car over; it would have doubled the cost of my festival ticket. I know someone on the mainland not far from the terminal, so I parked my car near her house so she could keep an eye on it, and got a taxi to the terminal.

About 1983, not 2023…

And they were shitty cars.
