Looking up something for October in Utah, slight hitch of probably going to end up doing a 1 way hire which leaves me with the big companies.

Looking like I can get a Ford Cmax or Escape (or equivalent) for about $410-460 US for the 12 days, seems fairly resonable. It's got taxes applied in the quote but wondering if there are any other hidden extras? (Excess insurace etc. are all in my travel insurance for the trip.

Should be just me and the bike in the evoc back plus a case for the trip.

Does that sound about right? Cheapest from elsewhere (hertz etc.) is a couple of hundred more so doing the too good to be true thing here.

My corporate rental is around $41-$51 for a standard, per day plus tax from enterprise. You flying into SLC? Rental for the big guys is right across from the terminal. Easy to get to with a bike bag. My rate for what you want is not a huge amount less than your quote so should be about right.

Yeeeeeees.

I was advised (budget?) that the included insurance was third party only, if you wanted the insurance to cover damage to the hire vehicle, that was extra... as was the obligatory excess reduction.

Worth adding it to your travel insurance (you can with lots of them) to avoid feeling like you've been fleeced.

Cheers, good to know.

Heading into SLC but off for a week of Conference in Park City so that price was one way Park City to SLC. Not really any cheaper to head back to SLC to pick it up either.

Cheers Batfink, the insurance stuff always goes on the travel insurance. It's a non commitment reservation anyway so if I find a better deal later on I can always cancel it. Or if the AU$/US$ blows out in the wrong direction in which case I reckon I'll have a very quiet holiday and explore the bus network - how long to ride from Park City to Moab...

Alamo Gold for me every time. Takes the hassle out of it. Use the EZ-Pass on toll roads or you'll run out of change quickly.

UK driving licence?

Remember that they've bought in that new system where you have to get a code online from the gov website to provide to the hire company so they can check for endorsments etc. and that it's only valid for 72hrs, so you might have to do it once you are there if you are not hiring straight away.

Call people and check that your insurance will cover and be accepted.

I was told by one of the companies (budget?) that they wouldn't deal with third party insurers, so I coughed up for the CDW. However later, the insurance company told me that they always say this and that they would still cover you, it just meant that the hire company wouldn't speak to them directly it had to go through you.

Car hire companies in the US are complete bastards for bending you over in the small print. As are many 'service' companies over there.

Watch for parking dings. Ours was knocked almost daily. Plus on the freeways they drive like dicks.

that is all kinds of wrong. The big co's dont care and the codes valid for 21days.

in the 5 or 6 times ive hired cars this year with work and privately ive never been asked for it - ive always had one but never been asked.

It seems that the multinationals just dont care about it - google it...

when you rent from a renta-dent youll likely need it - how ever in my experiance once they sting you for a couple of dings or a scratch it ends up costing the same as a reputable company.

Avis tried the same thing with me molly - they also tried "if the car breaks down your not covered for getting it back to here" - i said well if your that confident in your cars im not sure i want to hire from you..... cue lots of back pedaling from the fella on the desk.

Ah. OK. So, they've changed it. It was 72hrs:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/driving-licence-check-code-extended-from-72-hours-to-21-days

I've not had to hire a car since they bought this rule in. Just mentioning it, in case the OP wasn't aware of it (lots of people aren't).
And yeah, maybe many places don't care about it, but you can almost guarantee that the only time you don't bother with it, you get asked for it.

I'm hiring more often these days, I'm much better at deflecting the extras...

Did a walk round with the Hertz guy when I was heading back over to the UK and it had scuffs/scratches on most panels. Joked that it was good for me bad for them that somebody had beaten me to most of the panels... just got loads of marks over the sheet.

New one from Europcar, aware that everyone has their own excess insurance was to point out that their policy cost was less than the excess on the other policy.. took a bit of arguing on that one.
