I looked a couple of months ago and a Galaxy-sized car for next Feb half term was £400, it's now £1400. My wife reckons it will go down again but i don't think so. Should I book now or wait, WWSTD ?

Have you tried Holiday Autos for best prices? (They are on Quidco too).

When’s half term? I can see plenty at £400-600 on 11th-18th Feb. Also, France or Switzerland? Do you need more than a large 5 seat, 4 bag car / SUV?

As above try holiday autos I got a reasonable deal in April with only a few weeks notice even though there were price warnings.

Kayak (the flight place) can chuck up good deals too, particularly if you have some flexibility around pick up where you can click the ‘nearby’ box. I (and subsequently a friend on a different itinerary) saved 70% on a two-week US road trip earlier this year for the sake of a £40 Uber ride.

Also once you find a supplier, try direct via their offers / discounts page. You’ll also potentially get offered ‘pay later’ / full cancel deals for which you can hedge if the price does come down.

There are 5 of us plus we will have 3 massive cases when we arrive. Then we need to shuttle 5 people and 5 sets of skis around. I've seen a Passat estate, will that work

Also consider 2 economy cars rather than one large motor.

I had this experience a couple of months back. I’d advise to book the Passat now after checking the cancellation policy, normally it’s free until a set time. Then relax and check about.

As someone said above, huge difference if on the French or Swiss side, plus also double check your pick up and drop off times. I booked one cheap car only to realise later they close pickup 20:00 and I was landing at 22:30!

As above you can usually cancel up to around 48hrs before for no cost. I've just rebooked car hire for us going to Spain next week as it was £105 cheaper than when I booked it two months ago.

I've only hired once from Geneva and ended up going through Argus but the car was from Enterprise. Elsewhere I've always used Zest.
