The last couple of times Ive rented a hire car on the continent, I took the risk of not having excess insurance. (which is the standard rip off process when you arrive to collect it) I got away with it, but having just booked a car for a Lads ski trip, don't want to risk it again.

Is anyone aware of specialist companies to offer the excess insurance?

I've not done it, always just took the risk as only hired in the UK. But moneysavingexpert has a list if memory serves, that would be a good place to start.

I buy an annual Europe policy through Direct Car Excess, policy was £39 but got £7 back through Quidco.

As above Rockape, various comparison sites will link to various companies doing annual policies for £40ish. They'll also do single trip if you're sure you won't be hiring again in the year. As it happens, I took mine out last year in March (for rental for ski holiday) but we're going this year in January, so I get two winter trips and my van hire this weekend.

Worth it IMO - the financial consequences of even a no-fault crash on the continent are too scary for me to take the risk.

I've used https://www.icarhireinsurance.com and they paid out about 1000 euros without much hassle when someone drove into the back of our hire car.
