Anyone got any recommendations which Company for hiring a car and taking it to France & Belgium?
Travel restrictions in May permitting, 5 of us hoping to do a 5 day trip and a Passat/Octavia type estate looks like it's coming out at nigh on £800 with all the add ons......Nearly spat my tea out.....
I've only had a quick look so far and there maybe some discount coupons about, hopefully?

The option of hiring one in France isn't viable unfortunately.
So any advice on where to look would be great cheers.

Based in Kent.

Not mine, just the first one which came up, and it's in Blackburn but https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154300494104?hash=item23ed06b118:g:0DgAAOSwg-NfOlqN
Something like that makes far more sense than £800 to borrow one!

you can save a fair chunk on insurance by accepting the large excess and getting your own policy from insurance for car hire or one of their competitiors

sounds about right on price to me - car hire has become much more expensive in these times of covid as demand is high

IMO / IME getting a car from a cheapo company is a false economy - they try to sting you for minor scratches and if something goes wrong is a nightmare

Hmm... 5 day trip you say?
Cazoo do a 7-day 'no questions asked money back guarentee'.... May be an up front cost though, might just be a deposit

5 up in a Passat? Who draws the short straw for the half seat in the middle.

£800 doesn't sound too bad by modern standards.
I tried to hire a 4x4 for 9 days over Christmas (Volvo XC60 was the only available option at the time) and the prices were all over £2.2k.

Cheers guys.
Yes I think prices have jumped in Covid times, last I looked was Oct '19.
@ andrewh - those ideas would probably work out cheaper but cba with the hassle tbh.
The Passat estate was cheaper than the first thought of a galaxy or similar, but yes I get the seat thing lol, will probably be a few stops and seat changes if we go for that options!
@tj - are you on about CDW insurance? If so, yes I've done that when hiring a car in Dublin and it worked out cheaper so will look to see if I can do that hiring a car here and then take it abroad.

I have a policy from insurance for car hire that covers the excess that you generally get with hire cars  £50 ish for a years - so yes I think

given enterprise and arnold clerk the two firms I use have excesses of a thousand and costs 10 - !5 a day for CDW its a big saver

I have used Holiday Autos in the past and got some very good deals. And do it through Quidco for cashback too.

I recently returned a hire car and the (big national) company said they are desperate for cars, they can’t get new ones and demand for hire cars has shot up because of that. The car I was hiring from them (while my company car was being waited on) was more than 2 years old which was very old for them but they had no option to keep them for much longer than normal. (It was also knackered as you’d expect from a 2 yo hire car!!).
Might be a good reason why prices are high - if you want a car I would book it now before it’s too late to secure one.

Last hired a small car in Dublin in 2019 and it was so so cheap then. Not looked since but doubt it is now.

I'd buy an Elgrand, come back and sell it a week later.

Might be something to do with parts shortage.

Somebody drove into the back of our car in October, garage are still waiting for a part and we've been given a hire car the whole time...

I had a hire car for 14 months until my new company car turned up.
