My wife's 12 year Beetle is misfiring and juddering after periods of rain. It sorts itself out after it has been run for a bit and has had a chance to dry out.
What is getting wet, why is it getting wet and what can I do to fix it long term?
My GCSE engineering from 26 years ago makes me think spark plugs and or alternator / distributor. A targeted spray of WD40 seems to help. I just don't know why is it getting damp?

Insulation becomes more brittle over time and no doubt this is your issue. No experience of Beetles but look at the HT leads if fitted or otherwise the coil packs.

Also check there no water ingress into the near side front footwell.....this tends to be where VW put their electronics packs.....I know from an expensive experience on a Passat.
Check all the bulkhead drain channels are clear of detritus too, on the wife's 02 plate Beetle, the main drain channels seem to be at edges of the bulkhead and drain down the inner wing area. I scooped out half a bucket of decaying leaves, twigs etc.
Start with the cheapest and obvious remedies and get a code reader too.....see what codes are stored as this may well direct you straight to the electrical issue.

Thanks. I'd didn't know about the code reader. We have been paid someone to reset certain warning lights as couple of times - £18 and we can check diagnostics and then do it ourselves.
