[Closed] Car fixerists - Resetting ECU and that

Good day.

My 2002 Berlingo broke down the other day. Lost all power but engine still going.

The fault code put it down to the throttle position sensor which I've now changed. I also cleaned out the black gunk from the throttle body while I was there.

Since that change the car seems to run fairly well except sometimes when I put my foot down the revs will stay at about 3k revs. Sometimes slowing down and easing the clutch out will drop them and they'll stay dropped, other times they'll climb back up to 3k.

I read somewhere that this can be a symptom of cleaning out the throttle body meaning increased airflow and that I might need to reset the ecu so it can relearn stuff.

I can't seem to find a definitive method of resetting the ecu.

I've already tried disconnecting the battery and left it all day, then started it and let it idle up to operating temps but that's not seemed to change anything. Another method I've read is to disconnect the battery and touch the leads together to discharge any residual voltage.

Anyone know much about this? Barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers.

I am suspicious of the parts you have changed and the symptoms you are having tbh.....

New OEM , scrapers or pattern ?

Also I've only ever done business/ECU reset on bermingo using this method...

Follow this procedure for the reset (reboot).

Have the drivers window fully open.
Open the bonnet and make sure all equipment is switched off including interior light.
Close all doors and remove key from the ignition.
Wait 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery then wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the vehicle battery and wait a further 10 seconds.
Switch on the side lights through the driver’s window.
Switch on the ignition DO NOT start the engine at this point.
Hold the lock button on the key down for 10 seconds while key is still in the ignition.
Switch off ignition and remove key open & close door to test central locking system.
Start the engine.

It maybe that there needs to be cleared by laptop. The values maybe held in nvram.

The parts I've changed are basically what the fault codes threw up. Engine running fine but no response from accelerator.

I've had the same issue a while back too.

The part I bought was like for like as on the same part number. Not sure about makes or anything.

That method you describe above Trail rat. Isn't that to reset the BSI, not the ECU? Frankly, I don't know if they're one in the same thing anyway... :-/

Does your diagnostic device have the ability to show throttle position? If so I'd start there. Some TPSs need to be 'relearnt' by the ECU.

I don't have one actually. It was the AA diagnosis.

Relearning was why I thought resetting the ecu was what should be done when issues arise?

It is for bsi but worked for me when mine needed to relearn idle after new maf.

Only thing is my key fob hasn't worked for years.

How'd you hold down the lock button on the key when it does nothing? 🙂

Thanks but BSI-Body Systems Interface isn't the same as ECU I don't think. BSI controls stuff like central locking, headlights, windows etc whereas ECU is fuel delivery, throttle control, engine management etc etc.

I don't think the bsi is responsible for my sticking idle for want of a better term.
