My car has been classed as category c damaged (it is a dented rear door with paint damage not my fault) The insurance has paid out some money minus a retaining fee because we choose to keep the car as it still works fine. Are we legaly obliged to spend the money on fixing the car or can i just patch up the damaged paint and drive it around with a dented door?
As long as its road legal you can fill your boots 🙂
Insurance pay out for your loss, not to make good. Spend the money how you want.
Might be worth checking with an MOT station if there's any damage that might prevent future MOT pass?
Do as you please the pay out compensates for the loss in value of the car. Aslong as it's safe and road legal leave it as it is and keep an eye out for a door from a breaker in the same colour.
I thought Cat C meant structural damage that requires an inspection after the repairs are completed, before it's allowed back on the road ?
EDIT - the VIC scheme was abolished 1st October 2015.
Thanks yes its road legal. Will keep an eye out for a door to buy localy. Was quoted £500 to replace it by a body shop!
When mine was Cat D, the insurer required an MoT to prove it was roadworthy before they would agree to re-instate the policy. Your insurer may be different.
