Imminent arrival of a 4 legged furry friend has prompted me to consider a boot liner for my car.  It looks like the options are:

- £150+ for a lovely custom fitted job

- £55+ for a less lovely fitted job (which I'm sure will not be 100% fitted)

- £10-30 for a basic one size fits all

My car is a lease car which means it goes back after 2.5 years and it's likely that it won't be replaced with the same model hence if I buy a custom job it's got a limited lifespan.

I'm inclined to go for the middle option, any advice from the STW masses?

Is it an antelope?

If so, go for the dear option.

Is it two baby chickens?

If so, go for the cheap option

Hatchbag is lovely.

What car is it? I've got a 3-series BMW estate hatchbag for sale at the moment.

Just to avoid too many jokes and hopefully enable me get a 'ruff' idea of what may be a good option, it's a dog.

Car is an X3 (will also get something for my wife's Mini Countryman, hence preference not to have to splash out on top end).

Hatchbag is the top end model I have priced up.  Will definitely be ensuring a bumper flap as a minimum.

Stupid to think that I have always transported bikes in my boot using sheeting / blankets and only now looking at something proper.

I bought a 'boot buddy' http://www.boot-buddy.com/ promax kit. As they weren't far from me, I had them custom fit it to my 520 tourer. It needed a bit of work to fit it to the back seats.

Upside was I could throw a dirty bike in there and it was all wipe clean. Same with the dogs. Downside was it was a faff dropping the rear seats and extending the kit. It worked but eventually I removed the back part and just kept the U shaped plastic covering the boot and used old sheets to protect the back of the seats when they were down.

Removed it last week when I gave car back to BMW. Absolutely pristine underneath so worth the £100 or whatever I paid for it three years ago.

They do lots of options, we also bought the cover that flaps over the rear bumper - good to protect against dog claws. Nice people as well, lots of options on their website.

A BMW?

Go for the middle of the road option.

Looking at their site now, I think I'll get one of these http://www.boot-buddy.com/skoda/kodiaq-2017-present-5-seat-model-with-space-saver-spare-wheel-without-variable-boot-floor/versaliner as you don't need to mess about when you drop the seats.

Or the shorter one and dust-sheets again.

I have something similar to this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-X3-F25-SUV-2011-2017-Rubber-Boot-Liner-Tailored-Fitted-Black-Mat-Protector/173560991167?fits=Car+Make%3ABMW%7CModel%3AX3&epid=1152043844&hash=item28690a8dbf:g:q48AAOSwX0xbM118

Works well and because it is rubber it, and the dogs sitting on it don't slide around. When it gets too dirty, I hose it off.

Bought one of these years ago for an old, dearly missed 9 series Swedish Brick.
https://www.overthetop.co.uk/load-area-covers/

Still going strong in the latest Swedish Brick, even if it isn't quite a perfect fit. Money well spent.

I bought a couple of fitted boot lines from eBay £30-£40 one for a Merc on for a Fiat - pretty good fit both from different sellers. Shop around and go for one with pictures of it fitted to your model of car and not generic cut down one. Slight lip all the way round to contain spills.

Got a fitted one for the VW. Advantages are it is fitted to pockets too so still able to stuff towels etc in only pain is it blocks a 12v socket and a light but I can live without those.
Bumper flap is a definite.

I have a Boot Buddy versaliner + promax slidy bit - works OK but can be a faff at times. I'd probably buy a hatchbag if buying again

Rhino Boot liners are well made and waterproof, had one in a Cmax for 3 years, now got custom made to measure ones in a T5 Campervan.

I have a Carbox Form S bootliner from roofbox.co.uk for my lease car. It fits the boot really well and comes with a bumper protector for free. Think it was about £60 and money well spent.

I'd get a crate or pop-up travel crate for the boot too for your dog.

+1 for rhino.

Great product, and great company to deal with. When through no fault of theirs I needed to swap a liner they sorted me out.

Thanks for all the responses so far.  Looking at the Boot Buddy I'm not convinced the plastic sheeting look is for me.  I get the hatchbag is the Rolls Royce option but is a bit spendy.  Interesting some have recommended trays, and others fabric liners.  Am I going to be missing a lot by not having the protection on the vertical surfaces the liners offer over the floor tray types?

Also what travel crate do people use, this is Cocker Spaniel size I am after?

It's not a rhino, it's a Cocker Spaniel

Looking at the one I've just taken out, it was certainly scratched on the vertical sides. That might be because I knew it was there so wasn't taking care. Bikes have loads of sticky out bits when you put them in a car, so I went for as much protection as possible.

I also had a rubber mat in the boot so I didn't really notice the plastic. It is quite shiny tho.

+1 for Rhino. I'd always used cheap tarps before but I wish I'd gone Rhino a long time ago.

I use THIS in large for our cocker spaniel in the back of an XC60. Normally fold it down when not in use so it just lives in the boot.

With a bike - yes, if the tires are muddy. With a dog - I guess it depends if the dog is muddy and lies/slides against the sides. Some dogs would be ok with a towel thrown over them for the ride home, others not so much.

I have 3 small dogs and I use large soft crate(folds up easily) from pets at home. Dogs are all contained/safe and boot remains mess free. I do have cheap boot tray under crate too. eBay £30 job fits like a glove(mk7 golf estate)
