I have a sony head unit and a 2 channel alpine amp. I no longer use the active sub so I connected the rca leads to the amp to run the front speakers. On the head unit I can switch between the rca output to sub or rear. When set to sub it works (in mono) but when set to rear there is no output. Anyone know why this is? The head unit is also hooked up to the stock rear door speakers.
Cheers!
Are you getting an output from the rear door speakers when connected to the headunit normally?
Check that the fader hasn't been set to move everything to the front.
You could also check that there is some voltage down the RCAs using a multimeter to rule out the head unit not sending the signal.
Beyond that you would have to look at the amp and see if there is a levels issue or similar.
Thanks somouk, yes the rear door speakers work fine directly from the head unit. I've played with the fade and left to right settings to rule that out (that's how I know it's mono only when set to sub out). I've turned the low pass filter off on the amp and the head unit. I know the amp is working fine as it powers the front speakers when set to sub out. The only thing I can think is that having standard output going to the rear speakers cuts the rca out when set to rear out mode...
That is a possibility but I would expect it to swap between them so cut the high level rear speakers if you select the RCAs to be sub out if it can only drive one at a time.
What head unit is it?

If that is the case just connect the front outputs from the H/U to the rear speakers, and use the RCA set to rear to feed the front.
Then just remember that its back to front when you fade F/R!
It's a sony GT420u (I think); I know it only has one RCA output. I might remove it later and try without the rear speakers attached to see if that makes a difference.
Thanks mrjmt, I did consider that option if it works set to rear out.
I can probably get away with just running it set to sub out, I'm not sure I'd notice the lack of stereo but I was confused as to why it didn't work.
Cheers for the advice 🙂
