Are these only effective if the air con system no longer works or can they improve performance? My car has to have the fan on full for the temperature to be low enough. In other words, it works but only just.

Other half's car is ice cold.

Is it possible that a re-gas would help or does that only work if there's been a complete leak and emptying of the system?

How old is the car, or how long since last regas? If its a couple of years a regas is probably due.

it needs a regas, especially if you don't often use the aircon as lack of use causes seals to persih

get it done properly rather than use a can

My old Mondy was 12 years old and never had or needed a re-gas, was as icey cold when I sold it, as it was new.
However, latest Nissan is 3 yrs old and air con is crap, comes from Inverness so was probably never used.

Did you use your AC all through winter to speed up demisting? Some people think AC = cold and don't know about the dehumidifying (hence, as already mentioned, the seals drying out over winter)

I'd get the system leak tested first. Once you've established there aren't any leaks then get it regassed. An air con specialist will put a dye through the system to identify leaks. Had my car regassed recently but they found a pipe was leaking from the compressor so that needed fixed first.

Does "cough searching" help to identify leaks or need for regassing?

proper system leak test would be best to do first - not vacuum test but pressure and sniffer for leaks..

then it is test fine new gas.

legally the system must be tested for leaks before a regas, just take it to a garage and ask for a regas and the pressure test will automatically be done

just taken my 57 octavia for a regas, they said it had a small hole in the front of whatever it is, regassed it and fixed it. but.......it still doesnt get icy cold, just bearable. doesnt seem to be much difference between 22 degrees and 16 :-/

any ideas why that may be? somethings borked?

Have a look at the condenser radiator - the one in front of the main radiator- the fins on them are extra fine and can be easily damaged by stone strikes etc. Also they can be prone to corrosion. Either way this can cause the gas to escape = no working air con.
Also unfortunately VAG used very underated air con pumps and these are prone to failure.
