Looking at Cape Verde for me and the wife in June, something nicely chilled , I do remember seeing a thread on here recently mentioning cape Verde but cant find it , so opinions please ... prefer the look of boa vista .. worth going ?
cheers
All inclusive eating n drinking in one complex, I’d stay at home n spend your money on a nice new bike
Good kitesurfing.
If you hop around the islands it's kind of africa-lite, if you just want to stay in a resort there's options with shorter flights, less wind, and in June, plenty warm enough
It’s a long way to go and lots of pollution produced. Go for a ride! Perhaps take THE wife along too?
Myself and the wife stayed on the Isle of Boa Vista last September for a week. Great for chilling in the sun with all inclusive, we also saw the turtles lay eggs and the milky way which were both something else. Quad biking around the north of isle was great fun. The only downside it's windy but where we stayed it wasn't as bad also the sea can be quite rough but none of that bothered us.
Definitely worth a visit for a chilled holiday.
My neighbours got robbed at knife point daring to go for a walk along the beach early evening.
Unsure where they were staying but the hotel had an exclusive beach area , which had security . Outside of that area was clearly unpatrolled so they lost wallet and watches/ phones.
They wont be going back
Went to Boa Vista with TUI. Didn't get robbed, and we walked the beach most days. We did loose a few kg though. I'm not sure if it was the food, heat, ice, or a combo. But it wasn't pleasant and we weren't the only ones. It seemed quite rife so defo check TA for reviews if you do go.
Positive points are it was hot, chilled, not too busy when we went, nice staff and good price.
Negative points are we were both ill (as were plenty of others), nothing to do without booking on trips, rooms are a bit dated, and the plane broke on the way home (however we did get £1k+ back as compo)
Went in Jan 22 to Sal stayed at Melia Llana. Didn’t get robbed, walked along the coast every evening. World was just coming out of lockdown and we found a lot of places shut or gone bust. Hotel was nice as only had about 50% occupancy.
We won’t rush to go back. Nothing wrong with the place but it’s a long flight for the same holiday you could get in fuerteventura or lanzarote.
Been there (Sal) loads due work and once on holiday.
Epic Kitesurf and can have amazing surf (right now it's going off at Ponta Preta). Nice mellow wave next to pier in Santa Maria.
Good windsurfing off the point in town too.
Hobie cat rental from Atlantic Star next to the Hilton.
Chilled vibe, plenty of places to eat in town...also know a good few locals, all nice folk.
There's cycling, horse riding etc etc.
Avoid the all-inclusive resorts. Stay in town.
I'll be going back for Kitesurf trips in the future.
Rented an apartment on Sal for a week and had a very chilled holiday. Glorious beaches, windy, cheap fresh fish, long flight, will be hot in June.
In-laws went. They too had diarrhea, along with half the hotel. They were stopped by security from leaving/lots of warnings over security, they found that basically if you weren't at the resort or paying, there was little to do.
They got covid on the flight home.
All in all, they thought there's much better places for a holiday.
I've been to Sal twice for the windsurfing. Stayed in Santa Maria in apartments both times and have always felt safe. A few good places in town to eat and a couple of good bars with music till late.
Nearly always windy, so sometimes disappointingly cool if sunbathing is your thing.
Hired bikes and plugged away on a sandy lunar landscape for a few dull hours. Make sure you head off into the wind. That way the ride back takes less than half the time of the way out.
It’s a blooody long way for not much is my opinion. Would take the chance on the rain and head to the Azores if I wanted an island that was more interesting. Or possibly Tenerife or similar is an option. Nice islands in June also include Mallorca.
Don’t underestimate the distance to Sal - I think you’d be looking at a minimum of seven hours squished onto a 737 or something on a bad day.
saw the turtles lay eggs and the milky way which were both something else. Quad biking around the north of isle was great fun.
Quad biking is usually the kind of activity that interferes with delicate natural cycles like turtle reproduction...
I think tui call it a 'mid haul' flight which means they don't offer you any free food and don't offer the seat comforts of a long haul light. So basically a short haul plane for about a 6 hrs flight.
Good for winter sun, yearly average 27'c with around 23'c in January.
Been three times, I enjoyed it and will go back.
Fair enough if it isn't for you.
Six hour flight.
