I refuse to believe that’s a real thing.

It reminds of the old Lada Rivas.

It really is beyond ugly, I get that they have a design language to stick to but sometimes you've got to rip up the rule book. It looks dated already, I'm sure it's a lovely place to sit though.

That number plate will work well on French holidays. Just looks like a cut and shut between an old Range Rover and a the truck out of 'Duel'.

Still, it's not for our market, I guess. Can't remember the last time I saw a Roller in these parts.

Rollers have been ugly overpriced, over sized since about the 1980's. This is just climbing the next rung of the ladder that disappears up their own arsehole.

you can imagine the initial design meeting....

"we need to lose the grill"

"can't do it"

"it looks shit"

"can't do it"

"PLEASE"

"NO!"

Porsche are often accused of being lazy designers, but I can see where RR got the idea for this one.

It's not that bad IMO, certainly not pretty but sticking with RR's design language for an SUV was always going to end up with something fairly fugly looking - I don't think that colour helps either (likely looks a lot better in black...)

They've been making it since 1996, but I think this is the first time international taste as fallen to a level anyone would buy one...

The pictures don't really do them justice. They look alright in the flesh, much like any SUV they are never going to be pretty but I wouldn't say they are ugly

That is amazing, only the UK has the technology and skills to make something like that.

The black one looks like a cartoon bear. Or, actually, I'm playing the new Battletech computer game and you could totally balance it on the top of one of the slightly cartoony mechs in that and make it the head

The first (only?) BMW era Roller is a minger and has been accepted, so will this.

It's about bling/show of wealth.

Much like a carbon Santa Cruz etc.

Yeah, designed by a team headed by a Brit in Munich

Using a German 4x4 system, mated to a Czech gearbox powered by a German engine.

Alu body panels made in Norway, finished in Denmark and welded in Germany.

But yeah we Brits lead the world in making it seem like a British product by painting it here and putting the interior in and wheels on.

What is going on?!?

What, is the grand scheme of car things?

There’s been a global shift since the Credit Crunch / Great Recession - China and other countries in the Far East have evolved from a nations of poor workers and has gained a large and wealthy Middle Class, they love Euro brands like RR, Bentley, Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston etc etc etc but they don’t have such an emotional attachment to their history as until a few years ago they were largely unknown to them.

The new money in Asia love SUVs and don’t care about what they made 40 years ago - if Euro brands want to sell more cars they need SUVs - everyone said Porsche were mad 15 years ago when they made the Cayenne, but it sold more of them than all their other models combined since and it made them a massive pile of cash.

But the old “it’s really for the Asian market” like isn’t really true anymore, they’re popular globally now.

Correct. High end SUVs are ridiculously common out here. Spending 70k+ on a family car is very standard practice.

You're all wrong. It looks like a 1965 Jeep Wagoneer

But yes. Fugly vehicle built for China, Middle East and U.S markets who don't give a shit about brand heritage, history etc...they just want the biggest, blingiest, most powerful SUVs money can buy.  A chap up the road has a Bentley Bentayga and every time I see it I'm impressed by the paint (it's a lovely metallic blue) and how bright the chrome is, the leather etc...there's no doubt it's an expensive thing, but it's still fugly and ridiculous. I assume he has some kind of massive inferiority complex and/or chronic one-upmanship when a Cayenne Turbo or an SQ7 isn't sufficient.

Yep, just like every cat on the road, made from components from all over the world. There is no skill in car manufacture, they’re commodities. Made from parts supplied globally. But the 4wd system at least would be from tech the Germans learned from us during their ownership of Land Rover, so unlike most suv’s out there this one has half a chance of actually working off road.

they’re assembled and finished in Crewe by craftsmen and as each one is bespoke it’s not exactly an automated production line knocking off the same thing every 30 seconds, so just a wee bit more than “painting it here and putting the interior in and wheels on”.

but yeah, it’s fugly.

Haha, looking strangely similar to the car I own, but I'm not sure it's what RR are aiming for.

I give you the very capable and comfortable, but decidedly un-cool and un-available in the UK, Kia Mohave.
