Can't pay car tax

The DVLA website won't take my card payment because it thinks that my Visa Debit is the wrong card type for the card number. I have also tried all of the other Visa related options that they give.

Anyone else had this problem, or more importantly overcome it as I don't want to set up a direct debit which is the only other option?

Can you take the reminder letter to the post office and pay it that way?

Dunno what else you need, proof of insurance & MOT?

Doh, beaten to it!

pay it by DD - it'll be taxed immediately but they'll take the debit for the full amount in about a week.

Had exactly this two weeks ago. Multiple attempts and failures on my debit card but success using a credit card. I'm assuming it's them.

Why not, out of interest?

obviously I dumbly only read the first part of WCA's post. But the single payment DD option has no penalty unlike the instalment option, if that's your concern.

I had this in March. Logged out, cleared cookies, etc and went back in again and it still wouldn't work until I changed the card type to Visa rather than Visa Debit IIRC.

I've just had the same problem with a Mastercard debit card. Tried a credit card and it worked successfully

Didn't spot the one=off DD, I will try that now. I don't like DD as I have a habit of forgetting to cancel them and have been caught out paying automatic renewals on insurance for cars I have sold and similar.

The trick there is to immediately disable any automatic renewals on taking out the policy rather than rely on payments failing (which won't do your credit rating any favours).

In any case, are you planning on not taxing the car at some point in the future? You'd refund the tax on selling a car these days I believe.

As for the original query,

It's weird (but not unsurprising from the DVLA) that they ask you to specify card type. It hasn't made a difference to card processing in decades.
