Miss V was playing Xbox online with her mates last night, while chatting over the headset I heard her say "CBA" in reply to someone.

After spluttering out my tea in a manner befitting a startled proper gentleman I asked her what she had said, she confirmed she'd said "CBA" and seemed pretty non-plussed by it, which surprised me as she's not normally known for swearing - no matter how mild or acronym-ified.

I asked her to tell me what she thought it meant and she replied "Can't be asked"...  After confirming that there was no mix-up between her southern accent vs my northern ears, she was definitely saying "Asked" and not "Arsed".

After laughing in her tiny face for a while I Googled it and found she's not alone in this and it seems to be a common mis-usage.

Am I late to the party?  Was there a memo regarding redefining this acronym?  Am I out of touch with what the cool kids are up to (RHLSTP!)?  Or is she wrong and I can go back to laughing in her tiny face?

This has amused me on many levels. Thanks for sharing. 😀

[edit] especially as I initially typed the same response as above then changed my mind 😆 )

I've never heard of "can't be asked" and it makes no sense (not that "arsed" does either).  Sounds like an eggcorn to me.

Can't be asked?? WTF.

Whilst catching your breath from laughing in her tiny face you should take away her pudding privileges as well.

Bloody kids!

Can't be axed, surely?

"Y' tekkin th' wet" said some Staffordshire dweller to me once.

Do you mean "taking the piss"? I responded.

"Yes"

"Well, just say that then!"

We had a very poor working relationship.

I’ve never heard of “can’t be asked” and it makes no sense (not that “arsed” does either).

We had that conversation, between bouts of tiny face laughter.

Sounds like an eggcorn to me.

Good point, I might send it to Adam and Joe...
