Morning All,

I'm looking for a 24-70mm f/ 2.8L, if I can get a reasonable deal somewhere.

Any STW massive advice of where to buy (used maybe preferable)? And also where to sell/part ex my little use 17-85 IS USM?

Any advice much appreciated.

Have a look at the new prices on www.onestop-digital.com They seem to be about the cheapest anywhere.

How much do you want for the 17-85?

Cheers PP. I'll have a look!

I have no idea. I guess I'll have a look at ebay and see what they are going for?

I find this website quite useful for checking prices - camera price buster

Camera Price buster are £23 more than One Stop Digital for a 500d body though........

Seriously, OSD are bloody cheap, and the service is good too.

they're grey-market/Hong Kong based though? I'm never sure if this is a good way to buy stuff or not, though it is a lot cheaper than UK prices (I guess because you're dodging the VAT etc, wonder how they can guarantee that?)

Have a Google for 'Kerso'
He's a seller on eBay. Despite never having bought from him myself I've only heard good things about his service and prices.

Cheers

Paul.

This is really useful stuff. Thanks guys.

Looks like I may not be able to stretch to the 24-70 really.

Anyone have experience of the 17-40 f4L? I feel I'd not be getting a whole lot more lense than the 17-85 IS USM I already have. Hmm.

I'd sell my soul for L glass.

Check out the reviews on www.ephotozine.com, and have a long hard look at the test shots and then compare them to the test shots of your own lens....

but isn't it like hifi Peter, if you're concentrating on the detail you've lost the point of the subject ?

I have the 17-40L - lovely lens!
If you're local (SW London/Twickenham area) you can try it out!

Nick

To an extent maybe, but without the crisp accuracy and colour rendition of the actual scene you saw, you don't get to see the point of the subject regardless. CA at high contrast points are distracting and missed-focus is annoying, both happen on L's but much less often. It's one area where I thoroughly believe you get what you pay for, and providing you are capable of grabbing a good shot in the first place, the L will make things better. I've been considering a 17-40 for a while.

The devil is in the detail.

I already know I can't do *much* better quality wise with the kit I have. I'm starting to try different techniques and angles, but it's getting restrictive......

But I simply don't have £500+++++ to throw at a lens. Hence the "sell my soul" comment

Kerso on ebay is spot on, he's also on Talkphotograhy a lot.
I've got a 24-70 f.28 L if you want to try one, depending on whereabouts you are?
Be carefull if you're looking s/h though-I had three I sent back from various places before I got a good one!

I'd have loved to have had an L to get all the detail and colour in this one

Looking at 2nd hand - try these guys - Ffordes...
Been a while since I used them but they typically have a very good rep for accurate descriptions etc - worth a call, if nothing else.
They have one listed at £799.....

Another Kerso recommendation here.

The missus bought all her "L's" from him, even claimed the Canon cashback with the provided receipts.

Another vote for Kerso here. His stuff comes in from the US, but he provides a UK invoice for warranty purposes - not heard of anyone having a problem because of this. Last time I checked his lens prices were similar to OSD's

The 17-40 L is a cracking lens with fantastic image quality - It's almost permanently stuck to the front of my 50D. However, the new 15-85mm is reputed to have similar image quality and the extra range will be much more useful for me, so I might be tempted to switch. Bit cheaper too.

17-55 IS is also a cracker for crop sensor, bit pricy, but seen some great images taken with it

Ffordes and Midsuds are good for used.

New - check out Camerapricebuster.com (I think, may be co.uk?) as it lists prices from a number of suppliers. The 17-40L is a cracking lens though, got that (and 24-105L and 70-200L), although at the moment I am using my Sigma 24mm f1.8 a lot more... and I found that deeply cheap on the above website 🙂
